Hello everyone, I am currently planning the assembly of my new Ikea Pax wardrobe and have some questions regarding the fixing of the shelves. Specifically, I am interested in how to secure the shelves as efficiently and securely as possible – meaning they should be stable, remain easily adjustable, and cause no damage to the side panels. From your experience, are there any techniques or tools that have proven particularly effective? Tips on the included fixing parts or alternative solutions would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

The PAX shelves are usually supported by the included metal brackets. Simply insert the brackets into the pre-drilled holes and place the shelf on top. Make sure to use all brackets to evenly distribute the weight.

To answer your question in more detail: The efficiency of securing the Ikea PAX shelves largely depends on the proper use of the original metal supports. I recommend the following steps:
- First, carefully check the corresponding holes in the side panel, as PAX panels are often relatively delicate melamine boards, and overtightening can quickly cause tearing.
- If needed, use small rubber buffers or self-adhesive felt pads under the metal supports to reduce vibrations and slight movements.
- For a particularly sturdy installation, you might consider attaching small wooden strips to the inside of the side panels. These support the shelves and relieve pressure on the standard fixings.
- Important: Avoid overloading according to the vertical spacing of the shelves, since PAX shelves usually have a maximum load capacity that should not be exceeded.

Just to be sure: How many shelves do you plan to install, and what kind of load do you expect?

Thanks for the detailed input! There will be a total of 5 shelves, mainly intended to hold books and filing folders. I expect the load to be medium to heavy, especially with the filing folders. Your idea with the wooden strips sounds interesting – do you think it can be implemented afterwards without disrupting the overall look?

Most PAX owners agree that the included metal supports are quite sturdy, but when bearing heavy loads like binders, adding extra reinforcement is worthwhile.

Attaching wooden battens afterwards is straightforward; they are simply screwed to the inside of the side panels. However, it is important to use small screws that do not damage the material.

An alternative option is to secure the shelves with additional metal brackets on the sides – this provides even more stability and reduces sagging.

I consider metal brackets unnecessary if you use the original supports correctly. It is important to always align the shelves properly and position the supports individually and accurately.

If the shelves are securely seated, that should be completely sufficient.
