Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to upgrade my Ikea PAX wardrobe with new doors and have a specific question: Which of the PAX doors available at Ikea offer particularly good sound insulation?

It is important to me that noise generated inside the wardrobe—for example, from the doors slamming or from items stored inside—is minimized as much as possible.

I have read that some doors perform better than others due to material thickness or construction, but I lack detailed experience or technical data.

Does anyone have concrete experience or can recommend doors that are specifically known for effectively improving sound insulation? Or are there accessories like seals or special fittings that could be installed additionally?

The exact model name would be great, as well as any tips regarding installation or particular features related to noise reduction.

Thank you very much in advance for your advice!

Hello,

the best sound insulation is achieved with PAX glass doors, especially the frosted versions. Solid wood or chipboard doors provide less soundproofing.

Additionally, installing door dampers and rubber buffers helps prevent the doors from slamming shut.

It is also important to consider the door thickness and whether the door is hollow or solid. MDF doors with a thickness of around 12 mm (0.5 inches) are somewhat better than thinner particleboard fronts.

However, PAX doors are generally not designed as soundproofing solutions. For optimal sound insulation, doors would ideally need to be supplemented with additional insulating mats or other materials.

In summary, technical data and user reports indicate that doors with higher material weight and tight edge profiles offer better sound insulation.

- For example, the PAX HÖRDA full mirror door features a solid MDF construction and is fitted with a tight frame.
- Glass doors, while visually appealing, are not necessarily ideal for soundproofing due to their material and thinner construction.

Additionally, it is possible to install sealing strips to reduce sound transmission through gaps.

If soundproofing is a high priority, it is also advisable to pay attention to how the doors are hung and whether soft-closing is possible.

I can fully understand that sound insulation is important to you. I personally had the issue that my new PAX doors are quite loud when closing, which was disturbing at night.

Based on such experiences, in addition to seals, I switched to soft-close door hinges – this helped significantly to reduce the noise.

Perhaps this could also be an option if you don’t want to replace your doors entirely, but rather improve the existing ones.

Soft door closers for PAX wardrobes are available from Ikea or third-party suppliers. Installation requires little effort.

It is important that the doors are properly aligned; otherwise, even the best closers will not work effectively.
