Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to upgrade my Ikea PAX wardrobe with new doors and have a specific question: Which of the PAX doors available at Ikea offer particularly good sound insulation?
It is important to me that noise generated inside the wardrobe—for example, from the doors slamming or from items stored inside—is minimized as much as possible.
I have read that some doors perform better than others due to material thickness or construction, but I lack detailed experience or technical data.
Does anyone have concrete experience or can recommend doors that are specifically known for effectively improving sound insulation? Or are there accessories like seals or special fittings that could be installed additionally?
The exact model name would be great, as well as any tips regarding installation or particular features related to noise reduction.
Thank you very much in advance for your advice!

The sound insulation of a wardrobe door largely depends on several factors: material, construction, tightness, and installation.
Pax doors made from particleboard with a thin wood veneer layer are lighter and provide poorer sound insulation than doors with a solid MDF core.
Important to note:
- A higher density in the door material improves sound absorption and reduces transmission.
- The hinge plays a role because a snug fit of the door to the frame minimizes airborne sound leaks.
- Door seals, usually made of rubber or foam, are very effective at preventing sound from escaping.
For better results, I would recommend choosing doors with a solid MDF core (although they are heavier) and retrofitting complete sealing systems.
Unfortunately, Ikea does not offer specially sound-insulated versions of Pax doors. Retrofitting is therefore the more practical option.
For installation: Make sure that the seals are positioned precisely during mounting and that no gaps occur, especially with square, swinging doors.

The topic of soundproofing with PAX doors is truly a challenge. I have personally experienced how much standard doors can affect noise comfort.
Sometimes, simply being more mindful—such as avoiding quickly throwing doors open or slamming them—can help.
However, I agree with the idea of addressing the issue by using better doors or seals, especially when living in a shared apartment or with children.
Use the tips from benonon; I have had positive experiences with similar measures.

I am mainly concerned with noticeably reducing the sound when closing the doors – not so much the dampened interior noise inside the wardrobe, but the actual sound of the door closing.
The PAX doors ‘HÖRDA’ have already been mentioned. Does anyone know if they perform better compared to, for example, the PAX doors ‘Sävedal’ (which correspond to my current model number)?
I am also unsure about the edge sealing of the doors. Would edge banding or perhaps adding foam seals afterward be more effective?
Does anyone have experience with the long-term use of such seals? Do they become brittle over time, or do they hold up relatively well?

Does anyone know if they perform better compared to, for example, the PAX doors 'SÄVEDAL' (which match my current model number)? The HÖRDA doors are solidly built with an MDF core and are generally somewhat sturdier than the SÄVEDAL doors, which are thinner and lighter. Because of this, the sound insulation of the HÖRDA doors is indeed better.
Regarding the seals: high-quality rubber or silicone gaskets last several years if cleaned and handled carefully. Cheap foam seals tend to wear out faster and become brittle.
Technically, sound transmission when closing doors is mainly caused by impact noise and air gaps.
- HÖRDA doors have a more robust construction and improved sealing systems.
- Additionally, proper installation of the hinges reduces rattling and the buildup of unwanted vibrations.
If sound insulation is a priority, it is essential to use door dampers (soft close) and sealing strips along with choosing the right door.
The sealing strips should preferably be made of flexible rubber and checked regularly, as wear reduces their effectiveness.
