Hello everyone, I have a specific question about securely attaching the Ikea Pax handles to the doors. The doors are somewhat heavier than usual, and I want to prevent the handles from loosening over time due to frequent pulling or even causing damage to the material. Does anyone have experience with the best way to firmly and, above all, permanently secure the handles? Which screw length, materials, or additional measures are recommended to ensure the handles are truly stable and the doors remain undamaged? I would appreciate any tips and perhaps also advice on common mistakes during installation.

A good and often underestimated topic, thanks for the detailed question!

For securely attaching Ikea PAX handles to doors, I generally recommend the following:

- Screw length: Ikea usually provides screws designed for thinner doors. For thicker doors, you should use longer screws that ensure at least 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches) more penetration than the door thickness.
- Pre-drilling: It is important to drill precisely and to the correct dimensions to prevent the screws from splitting the wood or distorting the material.
- Material choice: If the door is made of MDF or particleboard, small metal plates can be added on the inside to securely fix the screws.
- Tightening: Use a torque wrench to tighten the screws or at least do so carefully to ensure they are firmly seated without crushing the material.

A common mistake is underestimating the original screw length and not replacing it according to the actual door thickness. Therefore, it is best to measure the door accurately before purchasing handles and screws.

If dealing with especially heavy doors, for example with glass fronts, I also recommend using small washers to increase the contact surface for the handles.

Additionally, I would like to point out that the screws supplied by Ikea for the PAX series often come only in standard lengths. For longer doors or repair needs, it is advisable to use high-quality stainless steel screws.

It is also recommended to use a screwdriver with adjustable torque settings to prevent over-tightening, which can lead to loosening of the screws during use.

If possible, it is best to reinforce the mounting holes with some wood glue or strong adhesive before screwing in the screws to enhance long-term stability.

From a technical and practical perspective, several key factors are important when attaching handles to Ikea PAX doors:

- Accurately determine the door thickness, especially for custom-cut panels.
- Check the screw tightening torque to avoid damaging the material.
- Use suitable stainless steel screws for corrosion resistance.

It is also recommended to use washers between the screw head and the door surface, particularly for doors with veneer or lacquer finishes, to prevent pressure marks.

Stability is further increased by ensuring the screws are not too short and are anchored at least 10 mm (0.4 inches) into the door material. Alternatively, metal threaded inserts can be installed in the door, although this is somewhat more complex.

An alternative, especially for glass PAX doors, are adhesive handles made of silicone or metal with an adhesive base that require no drilling – however, these are less ideal and less durable for wooden doors.

For additional reassurance: when the handles are properly installed, they will hold up well even with frequent use.

My advice is to apply a small drop of wood glue inside the holes after pre-drilling – this strengthens the threads and reduces the risk of screws loosening.

It is also important not to apply full force to the handles immediately after installation. Wait at least one day before normal use to allow the glue (if used) to fully cure.

A poor approach is to overtighten the screws and then try to force them tighter – this usually damages the material, especially on inexpensive doors like those from Ikea’s PAX system.

In short: Buy screws that match the door thickness, pre-drill, screw them in, done. If the screws are too short, the handle won’t hold. No big tricks needed.
