Ben-jaHello everyone, I am currently planning to modify my IKEA Besta shelving unit and have a question: How can I convert the Besta into an open shelf with integrated lighting and additional storage without compromising stability or aesthetics? It is important to me that the lighting is discreet yet functional, preferably LED-based, and fits well with the existing design. I also want to make good use of the opportunity to expand the storage space, for example with extra compartments or drawers that blend in harmoniously. Who has experience with such modifications and can offer advice on material selection, necessary tools, or special techniques?

This allows you to adjust the brightness as needed. Make sure to route the power supply through posts or hidden on the sides to avoid disrupting the design. For storage, you can stay flexible by removing individual compartments and installing drawers or shelf baskets. Depending on the material, it makes sense to use lightweight wood panels or MDF to maintain overall stability.
An open BESTA shelf with lighting is best achieved by combining slim LED strips with transparent or translucent covers. For storage, IKEA itself offers practical boxes that are perfectly sized to fit the BESTA shelves. If you need more flexibility, you can also equip individual compartments with rails for drawers. For electrical wiring, I recommend routing the system behind the furniture and using plug-and-play connectors to simplify installation.
Thanks for the responses so far! Regarding the power supply, I have a specific question: I want to install the lighting as discreetly as possible along the side profiles or inside the shelf without visible cables. Are there any recommendations on the best way to neatly route the power cables? What about possible drillings in the frame of the BESTA? And what do you think: Is it possible to integrate LED strips with motion sensors so that the light automatically turns on when the shelf is opened?
