Hello everyone, I am currently exploring how to combine Ikea Hemnes furniture with plant styling in a way that doesn’t look cluttered or compromise the furniture’s functionality.

My main focus is on how to blend the clear and rather traditional design language of the Hemnes series with lively, green accents to create a harmonious yet modern atmosphere.

Which types of plants, containers, or decorative elements do you think work best for sideboards, dressers, or shelves from the Hemnes range? And do you have any practical tips for placing the plants so they complement the furniture while also standing out on their own?

Looking forward to your ideas and experiences!

A very interesting question!

For combining Ikea HEMNES furniture with plant styling, I recommend the following approach:

- First, carefully analyze the furniture surfaces: The HEMNES series is usually made of solid wood with a classic design. The surfaces are often light to medium brown or painted white, which generally works very well as a background for many plants.

- Plant types: I tend to prefer green plants with fine, airy leaves such as ferns or ivy, which provide a soft contrast to the sturdy look of the furniture. Succulents or small cacti in minimal pots also work well.

- Containers: White or terracotta vessels complement the HEMNES style nicely. Containers made of natural fibers or wood can also create a harmonious look.

- Placement: Plants on the dresser benefit from varied heights, for example by choosing pots of different heights or arranging plants on small wooden stands.

- Tip: Avoid waterlogging in the container, as HEMNES furniture is made of wood and should be protected from moisture.

I hope this helps as an initial guideline!

Exactly, that’s an important point. Additionally, I recommend considering functionality when styling: plants that need regular watering should be placed on saucers or use self-watering systems.

From a practical perspective, I also suggest choosing rather hardy plants, such as ZZ plants (Zamioculcas) or snake plants, which require less maintenance but still provide a good visual effect. This is especially important for sideboards, where you also want to use the surface space.

One more tip: the color of the plant pots should complement the furniture tone to create a harmonious overall appearance.

Thanks for the great suggestions so far! Personally, I often find it challenging to find the right balance because I’m worried that the plants might eventually be neglected or that the furniture could end up looking too cluttered.

Maybe it helps to think in advance about how much maintenance you’re actually willing to do and choose low-maintenance plants accordingly.

Another idea could be to place plants on the wall next to HEMNES shelves—such as using hanging pots or wall vases—to make the furniture appear less “overloaded” while still keeping it green and lively.

Plants on HEMNES furniture? I would prefer orchids in simple white pots. They look elegant, are easy to maintain, and match the clean style of the furniture well. Just place them on dressers or shelves, that’s enough.

A brief addition: I find smaller succulents very practical for HEMNES sideboards because they require little water and don’t look overcrowded in small pots. They also complement wood very well, even with white lacquered versions.

The arrangement can then be enhanced with small natural stones or wooden bowls to emphasize the natural look.
