Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to make IKEA Hemnes furniture as child-safe as possible. Specifically, I am concerned about common safety risks such as wardrobes and dressers tipping over, as well as the danger of children unintentionally opening drawers or doors and potentially injuring themselves or causing items to fall out. I am also interested in additional measures to secure corners and whether it is advisable to treat the materials or surfaces with special products to eliminate health risks. Does anyone have extensive experience or recommendations on how to best protect the different Hemnes furniture pieces? I am interested in practical tips, available safety accessories, and possible modification suggestions.

Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to make IKEA HEMNES furniture as child-safe as possible. This is a complex and important topic. The HEMNES series mainly consists of wooden furniture, which is sturdy but also requires stability measures due to its weight to prevent tipping. My approach would be as follows:
- First and foremost, secure all furniture firmly to the wall. IKEA provides special wall anchors for this purpose, which should definitely be used. The mounting must be stable and suitable for the type of wall, so appropriate anchors or plugs are necessary.
- For drawers and doors, I recommend plastic child safety locks, either mechanical locks or magnetic catches, which are installed inside and can only be opened with a special key.
- Corner protection: Soft foam or silicone corner guards can be applied to sharp edges. It is essential to ensure the material is non-toxic and adheres securely.
- Surfaces on HEMNES furniture are usually lacquered, so I do not recommend adding extra sealants, as these could affect the product’s safety regarding chemical emissions.
- Regularly check the furniture for loose screws or damaged edges.
If you like, I can provide specific product recommendations for the safety devices. Which pieces from the series do you have exactly?

Does anyone have extensive experience or recommendations on how to best protect the various HEMNES furniture pieces?I have young children myself and use both the HEMNES dresser and a wardrobe. In my opinion, it’s important to approach this patiently and apply safety measures systematically:
- Wall anchoring is really essential, especially for tall furniture.
- Use child safety devices that are easy to install and leave no marks.
- Avoid harsh chemicals and instead choose environmentally friendly products.
The child safety locks on the drawers are very practical; I recommend magnetic types because they prevent little ones from accidentally accessing the contents.
It is also important to teach children from the start to handle the furniture carefully. Even though safety devices help, they do not replace supervision.
Regarding the topic "How to childproof IKEA HEMNES furniture," the following points can be noted:
- Wall anchoring is the primary measure to prevent tipping. It must always be adapted to the wall material (e.g., concrete, drywall, wood).
- For drawers and doors, certified child safety locks are recommended, which can function mechanically or magnetically.
- Additionally, edge protectors can be used, but only certified products with the appropriate safety certification should be applied.
- HEMNES furniture is already coated with low-emission paint; further surface treatment is neither necessary nor advisable.
It is important to adapt the safety equipment to the specific piece of furniture and its usage environment. For detailed advice, the dimensions, weight, and installation location should be known.

- HEMNES dressers and cabinets often include adjustable shelves, some of which can be removed. These should be securely fixed to prevent them from being pulled out.
- For child safety locks, universal latches that can be adjusted flexibly are also an option.
- To prevent children from crawling under the furniture or using it as a climbing frame, barriers can be installed, such as furniture wedges or side panels.
My recommendation: When purchasing furniture, check if safety accessories are already available. This significantly reduces the effort later on.
