Hello everyone, I would like to start a discussion to find out which DIY projects work best with Ikea Hemnes furniture. I plan to remodel or functionally expand some of the classic HEMNES cabinets and dressers, but I want to make sure the project is technically feasible and does not damage the furniture or affect its stability. I am particularly interested in creative modifications that are appealing both visually and functionally, for example shelving systems, room dividers, or personalized paint finishes and combinations. Perhaps someone already has experience with such projects or can recommend suitable material combinations, tools, or approaches. What DIY projects have you completed or can recommend with Ikea HEMNES furniture that are both achievable and add significant value? If possible, please also share important details regarding the implementation.

A classic approach is converting dressers into sideboards with open compartments by removing the back panels or leaving out doors. However, attention must be paid to stability, which may require reinforcement with brackets or additional supports. Painting with opaque or translucent finishes offers plenty of room for customization.
Basically, Ikea HEMNES furniture is made of solid wood, which makes it stable and durable. DIY projects benefit from this, as the surfaces are easy to work on – for example, sanding, staining, or painting. However, altering the basic structure requires care, since the connectors often rely on a tongue-and-groove system. One option is modular shelving combinations, where individual elements can be taken apart and reassembled to create a solution adapted to your needs.
Thank you for the answers so far. I am still interested in how much the material should be taken into account when modifying HEMNES furniture, for example regarding the load-bearing capacity of shelving systems or the appropriate type of paint or protective coating. Which DIY projects require particularly precise preparation, as otherwise the furniture may be damaged or weakened?
To consider the aspects of load-bearing capacity and material durability in detail: HEMNES is made of pine or solid pine, which is sturdy but should definitely be reinforced when making major modifications such as removing back panels or cutting through the back walls. I recommend using additional metal L-brackets or strong wooden strips attached to the back to prevent warping or instability. For surface treatments, traditional water-based paints are suitable because they keep the wood breathable and do not seal it too tightly. This prevents later swelling and shrinking. Alternatively, oils can be used if a matte finish is desired. For heavily used surfaces—such as shelves used for storing books—a clear varnish sealant is worthwhile to prevent scratches. Special care should be taken when modifying drawer mechanisms or installing additional slides, as the drill holes must be precisely placed and the stability of the drawer sides is critical.
