Hello everyone, I have a question about maintaining Ikea Hemnes furniture, especially in households with heavy use. My Hemnes dressers and shelves are under constant stress from frequent use and sometimes from children and pets. I am particularly interested in how to best preserve the surface and wooden components without damaging the finish, paint, or wood texture. Are there any special care products or techniques recommended to prevent scratches, discoloration, or material wear? So far, I have been using standard furniture care products but wonder if there are better solutions for heavily used Hemnes furniture. Thank you very much for your tips and experiences!

Honestly, Hemnes furniture isn’t a miracle when it’s subjected to heavy use on a regular basis. Maybe these affordable pieces simply aren’t designed for continuous heavy-duty use. No special treatment will completely protect them—you’ll need to do repairs or replacements sooner or later. I think people often expect Ikea products to last forever, but that’s just not the idea behind them.

I understand the issue and can offer some practical tips on how to keep Hemnes furniture in good condition for as long as possible despite frequent use:

- Avoid standing liquids on the surfaces to prevent water marks.
- Use mild, non-abrasive cleaning products, preferably gentle wood care oils or special furniture waxes suitable for lacquered wood surfaces.
- Regular dusting helps prevent dirt buildup that can cause scratches.
- For visible scratches, furniture touch-up markers in the matching wood core color often help to conceal minor damage.

Following these care measures can noticeably improve the durability.

To add, Hemnes furniture is made of solid wood, usually coated with paint or a transparent protective layer. Therefore, care products should not contain harsh chemicals. A mild all-purpose cleaner or a cloth dampened with clean water is often sufficient. Surface treatments with beeswax or hard wax can renew the wood’s protective layer, making it more resistant to dirt and moisture, and supporting its durability.

Care tip: Regularly remove dust, avoid using harsh cleaners, and touch up scratches with furniture markers. There is not much more that can be done for heavily used furniture.

You can also attach felt pads under heavily used furniture to reduce the stress on contact surfaces. This helps to prevent scratches on the wood caused by friction or movement.
