ᐅ How can Ikea HEMNES furniture be made child-friendly for rental homes?

Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question that has been on my mind lately: How can Ikea Hemnes furniture, which many of us know from rental apartments, be made child-friendly enough to withstand daily use with small children without having to replace the furniture entirely?

I really like the design and storage options of the HEMNES series, but the wood surfaces are quite delicate, and the edges and corners could be problematic for kids. In my view, the functionality isn’t always ideally suited to children’s needs. Does anyone have experience or ideas on how to adapt this furniture safely and practically for families with children—also considering moves or limited possibilities for modifications in rental apartments?

I think it is important to critically examine how truly “child-friendly” Ikea furniture with the Hemnes design can be.

For example:
- The hard wooden surfaces are prone to dents and scratches, which cannot be solved simply by using felt pads, as they wear out quickly.
- The stability of the furniture is often less than ideal without additional anchoring, especially with tall cabinets when there are children in the house.

Has anyone here gained experience on how to stabilize furniture without drilling in rental apartments? Perhaps using clamp or tension systems?

In my view, just adding accessories does not adequately solve the issue.

Oh yes, I find this topic super interesting! We just installed transparent corner protectors, and they really helped us a lot. These clear things are barely visible and greatly reduce the risk of big bumps on little heads!

I also highly recommend using colorful fabric baskets in the lower shelves; it makes tidying up fun and stops the little ones from grabbing everything randomly. 😊

And the furniture protective film on the table? Great tip—it’s easy to wipe clean and can be replaced quickly if there are scratches.

I believe you just need to be a little creative to gain so much comfort for families!

To add my perspective: the stability of HEMNES dressers and cabinets is indeed a crucial factor. For rental apartments where drilling is not allowed, I recommend
- using anti-slip pads under the furniture
- a combination of decorative wall fasteners that work without drilling (tension or clamp systems).

The furniture is otherwise very sturdy, but especially with small children who like to climb, accidents can happen.

Additionally, I advise regular checks of fittings and safety devices – many small measures combined significantly increase safety.

I can totally relate to that, especially when children are still very young, you worry about corners and possible harmful substances.

That sums it up well; it’s not just about the furniture itself, but also about health.

This is one of my main challenges: finding a neat, legal way to secure furniture without upsetting the landlord. Are there brands or suppliers offering tension or clamp solutions compatible with HEMNES?

Thanks for all the input so far, which together already provides a good foundation.

Regarding the question of stabilization without drilling: There are indeed some “anti-tip” kits that use clamping or self-adhesive components. These are usually attached to furniture and walls with strong 3M adhesive strips.

It is important to check the wall surface – effectiveness is limited on wallpaper or plaster with low adhesion.

Additionally:
- Regularly check the attachments
- Do not rely solely on the manufacturer’s instructions; perform your own load tests

This enhances safety measures and significantly increases child safety.

It would be practical if all these safety features and child-friendliness aspects were offered together in a user-friendly kit.

There are no official Ikea accessory sets for HEMNES, but third-party suppliers offer modular edge protectors, transparent protective films, and clamp aids, which can be combined individually.

The challenge with rental apartments is reversibility: adhesive residues and drilled holes must be avoided.

Here, Ikea could address the needs of young families with additional products to increase the appeal of the HEMNES line.

I recommend always checking the compatibility with HEMNES dimensions before purchasing protective materials.
