AntanaHello everyone, I recently furnished a complete children’s room with IKEA Hemnes furniture and am now wondering how to best maintain it so that it stays in good condition for as long as possible and can withstand everyday use by children. Besides cleaning, I am especially interested in advice on how to generally care for the wood to avoid damage such as scratches, water stains, or warping. Does anyone have experience with the specific materials and finishes of the Hemnes series in a children’s room? Which cleaning products and methods are safe and effective? Your advice would be very helpful!
Hello Antana, your question is very detailed and well formulated, so I can address it directly in depth. Hemnes furniture is made from solid pine wood, which is naturally more sensitive to moisture and mechanical damage than veneer furniture. For cleaning, I always recommend a soft, slightly damp cloth – microfiber is ideal for removing surface dirt. Avoid aggressive cleaners containing ammonia, alcohol, or bleaching agents, as these can damage and fade the finish. Mild soapy water, well wrung out, works best.
To prevent scratches, you can occasionally treat the furniture with furniture oil. Make sure the oil is specifically suitable for pine wood and applied thinly to avoid leaving greasy marks. Another important precaution is to avoid placing hot or wet objects directly on the surface. For children’s rooms, I also recommend using textile mats or felt pads under toys or decorations.
I am also curious whether the surfaces of your furniture are already sealed with wax or lacquer? This makes a big difference in care and resistance to moisture and dirt.

Thank you for the detailed response, kibutar. The furniture was treated with a standard white lacquer that preserves the pine wood character but is supposed to offer some protection. However, I am mainly concerned about stains from water, juice, or frequent play with paints. I’m not sure if the lacquer is protective enough. How thoroughly should I apply the furniture oil, and how often? Also, do lacquer and oil work well together, or should I avoid using oil? The advice about felt pads is great; I will implement that right away.
Hello Antana and kibutar, very important points have already been raised here. Regarding Hemnes with the white lacquer finish, I can add the following: IKEA often uses a polyurethane-based lacquer finish, which is relatively durable but not indestructible. This means that minor scratches or stains can be repaired with fine sandpaper and subsequent repainting. Before applying furniture oil to a lacquered surface, you should be sure that the lacquer layer will not be damaged, as oil can dissolve or alter the finish.
My tip for cleaning: Avoid using pure soap solution; instead, use gentle cleaners with a pH-neutral formulation. It is also important to remove moisture immediately to prevent water stains. In a child’s room, frequent cleaning is unavoidable, so it is worth using a mild furniture care product that offers both maintenance and protection.
For protection against stains and scratches: transparent protective films or placemats can help. Perhaps you have also considered sealing by applying clear lacquer or furniture wax to make the surface more resistant?

For maintaining the Hemnes furniture in the children's room, I recommend regularly cleaning it gently with a damp cloth and wiping off stains immediately. Do not use abrasive cleaning agents! To protect the surface, you can attach felt pads under decorations and toys to prevent scratches.

Another important precaution is to avoid placing hot or wet items directly on the surface. Exactly! And when the little artists suddenly start a craft project—no need to panic! A slightly damp cloth and some patience are your best allies here. Hemnes may not withstand unlimited kids’ chaos, but a little care makes damage barely noticeable. Oh, and felt pads are really invaluable—don’t hesitate to make such a small investment. And hey, who says kids’ rooms have to be perfectly tidy? The most important thing is that they’re made with love 😉
