Hello everyone, I recently ordered several pieces of furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series, which are known for being quite solid and large. My question is: What is the best way to transport these Hemnes furniture items without causing any damage during transit? I want to avoid scratched edges, broken surfaces, or deformation due to improper storage. Are there any proven tips or materials that should definitely be used? And what about disassembly – is it better to completely take the furniture apart or transport it as is? I would appreciate practical advice since transporting them in my car will be quite tight, and I need to be very careful.
Hey Rene2, great question! 😊 Hemnes furniture pieces are really nice, so it would be a shame if they get damaged during transport! I would definitely recommend disassembling the furniture as much as possible before moving. Luckily, Hemnes is designed so that many parts can be easily taken apart. And very important: packing materials! Bubble wrap or thick blankets are your best friends to protect the surfaces. Also, be careful when loading—don’t stack anything to avoid pressure or shifting. That way, it should arrive without any scratches!
I wonder whether completely disassembling furniture is always advisable. For example, with Hemnes dressers, frequent dismantling can weaken the joints. Are there any experiences or guidelines on how often such furniture can be taken apart without causing long-term damage? Also, how durable are the materials when subjected to heavy handling? Perhaps it is better to remove only the doors and leave the main structure intact to preserve its stability.

So far, I have only assembled Hemnes furniture once or twice, but haven’t taken it apart often. If the joints really do suffer from repeated disassembly and reassembly, it might be sensible to consider a mixed approach. For example, removing the doors and drawers and transporting the main frame carefully. However, as far as I know, Ikea does not usually hold back on robust joint options with Hemnes furniture.
Regarding the durability of the joints, I can add that in Hemnes furniture, the connection holes are often made from prefabricated particleboard, which can easily break if the furniture is frequently disassembled and reassembled. Therefore, it is advisable, if possible, to only remove the doors and drawers to reduce weight and avoid damage to the main frame. It is also important to carefully label the screws and connectors after disassembly and store them in a separate bag to ensure smooth reassembly.
To protect the surfaces, I recommend applying felt pads or protective film to specific edges. Otherwise, some parts may easily rub against vehicle walls or other surfaces.
