Hello everyone, I am currently exploring the topic of sustainability in furniture and specifically wondering: Are there any sustainable DIY ideas for repurposing IKEA Hemnes furniture?

I am especially interested in creative and practical approaches that allow giving these pieces a second life through simple or moderately complex modifications. These could include conversions, upgrades, repurposing, or repair methods.

It is important to me that the materials and methods used are as environmentally friendly as possible, meaning they should avoid artificial pollutants or unnecessary resource consumption and ideally support recyclability.

Has anyone had experience with specific projects or can share ideas that work well with the Hemnes series? Tips on preparation or the best tools to use would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

A very interesting topic, especially since IKEA Hemnes is often made from solid pine, which is generally an advantage for durable furniture. Sustainable DIY ideas should focus here to make the most of the wood quality.

My suggestion: A popular way to repurpose is to transform old dressers or cabinets into multifunctional furniture pieces, for example by removing fronts and adding extra compartments or baskets. It is important to treat the wood surfaces with natural oils like linseed or walnut oil, as they preserve the wood’s breathability and do not create a harmful film.

If the furniture is already painted or lacquered, it is advisable to carefully remove this layer with fine sandpaper (grit 240 or finer) to expose the raw wood. Be sure to sand along the grain to avoid damaging the wood fibers.

For tools, you might need, in addition to sandpaper, a small electric sander, baskets made of natural fibers, and clamps if you are, for example, mounting new shelves. I also recommend removing old Hemnes doors and reusing them as tabletops or benches – usually made from the same quality solid wood.

One more question for you: Which specific pieces from the Hemnes series are you planning to repurpose? That will help to give more focused advice.

Good question. Mainly, it’s about a Hemnes dresser with multiple drawers and a sideboard, both of which have been used for several years and show some minor signs of wear but are still structurally very sound.

I’m thinking about conversions, such as transforming a dresser into a modern kitchen island or converting a sideboard into a TV unit with additional storage. Of course, I want to use sustainable materials as much as possible, like natural oils and non-toxic paints.

If anyone knows concrete examples or step-by-step guides, that would be very interesting for me!

A sustainable recycling of IKEA Hemnes chests of drawers or sideboards can be effectively approached with some thoughtful DIY steps. Here is a brief summary of a possible method that encourages customizing the furniture and remodeling it in an eco-friendly way:

- First, carefully inspect the piece of furniture, especially checking for loose joints or damaged parts, and stabilize them if necessary using wood glue made from natural resins or wooden dowels.

- Gently sand off old paint layers, using manual fine-grit sandpaper to treat the surface with care.

- To redesign the furniture sustainably, for example, the back panel can be removed and replaced with sturdy wood panels from FSC-certified production, which are environmentally responsible and add more stability to the piece.

- Treat the surfaces with high-quality, non-toxic natural oils. This not only provides protection but also enhances the appearance.

- For modifications such as a kitchen island, attach additional components like metal casters with rubber tires to enable mobility.

- To create more storage space, build boxes and shelves from recycled wood or wood remnants, fitted precisely to the original drawer or compartment dimensions.

- Alternatively, lime-based paints are also a sustainable option to add color to furniture without using lacquer.

Common mistakes include using overly aggressive sanding methods or chemical thinners that can damage the wood surface. It is best to test on an inconspicuous area beforehand.

I converted an old Hemnes dresser into a shoe rack. I simply removed the drawers and installed shelves. Treated it with linseed oil, and it has held up great for 2 years.

Wow, that sounds really exciting! It’s great that you are approaching sustainability so concretely. I can only encourage you: go for projects like this!

Recently, I also converted a Hemnes dresser into a plant shelf! The natural wood look is simply amazing when treated with natural oils and dark stains. This way, you get cool vintage vibes without harming the planet.

It’s really fun to create something yourself and produce less waste at the same time!
