Hello everyone,
we are currently gutting our new apartment and would like to start planning the bathroom. We are facing some challenges in how to best divide the space and would appreciate your support.
I am attaching the floor plans of the apartment. Our goal is to include a guest toilet if possible and practical given the limited space. There is an option to enlarge the bathroom by about 25 cm (10 inches), moving the wall further into the kitchen.
The main requirements for the bathroom are:
The bathroom entrance can be modified to create a rectangular room if this looks better aesthetically.
If you have any creative ideas for space-saving or especially functional layouts, we would be very grateful! We are open to suggestions and look forward to hearing about your experiences.
Thank you in advance!

The main requirements for the bathroom are:
- Toilet (ideally also a urinal, if feasible)
- Large washbasin with mirror cabinet
- Walk-in shower (at least 1 x 1 m (3 ft 3 in x 3 ft 3 in), preferably larger)
- Bathtub
- Heated towel rail
- Niches, for example in the shower, for storage
- Enough space for a shelf and a laundry basket

hanghaus202325 Nov 2024 13:49I prefer the door to be slightly recessed into the bathroom.

There is also space for a towel rack behind the door.
In my opinion, a separate toilet room with only one door is not feasible. That’s why I suggested in post #12 a separate toilet room. A small washbasin can also fit in there.
Pictures and plans of the existing structure are often very helpful.

Who planned the bathroom? With 3 windows and a sill height of 90cm (35 inches)?
But without the following:
- Toilet (ideally also a urinal if possible)
- Large washbasin with mirrored cabinet
- Walk-in shower (at least 1x1 m (3x3 feet), preferably larger)
- Bathtub
- Towel radiator
- Niches, for example in the shower as storage
- Enough space for a shelf and a laundry basket
Where is all of this supposed to fit?
Is the floor plan DIY?The house was built in 1960 and the bathroom has hardly been renovated since, so there aren’t really any plans left.
Originally it was actually a guest toilet and a bathroom, but we removed all the dividing walls.

Here is a suggestion including all your wishes.

Trapezoidal bathtub 180x90cm (71x35 inches)
Shower 140x100cm (55x39 inches)
Washbasin 140x60cm (55x24 inches) — there’s even room for a double basin.
Mirrored cabinet 140x20cm (55x8 inches)?
Shelf up to the sill 135x40cm (53x16 inches)
Shelf between the windows as an alternative
Laundry basket diameter 55cm (22 inches)
What are the dimensions of your furniture?
The partition wall on the window wall seems unnecessary to me.
I have a bad feeling about measuring the stairs. 310x70cm (122x28 inches)??? We will also buy new furniture, so we’re not really tied to anything.
The partition wall is mainly to conceal two downpipes running up; it could be used as a niche by the bathtub.
The staircase will be about 80cm wide (31 inches) and is only for access to the bedrooms in the attic.
The attic is separated again and there’s still the stairwell.
Thank you very much for all your suggestions! But we’ll skip the separate toilet and use the space for a relatively large bathroom instead.
Would you include a urinal in the bathroom at all? As someone else mentioned, it’s not really a design highlight.
What is the typical price range for a “standard” bathroom of this size?

Can we assume that the entire floor structure (approximately how high?) will be replaced?Yes, the entire floor structure will be redone. For the shower, we will use tileable shower trays with drainage channels, because we will install a dry screed system.

A separate toilet is possible, but not ideal. It has a sliding door that can be closed when guests are over.Cool, I planned something similar.fisherman12 schrieb:

The bathroom won’t be any bigger if you don’t do that.
I would rather consider the bathtub. Because you can see that it will likely be space-saving bathtubs. So... how tall are you? How big would the tub need to be? And how often would it actually be used?
