Hello,

We are building a single-family house and are currently just in the initial phase (building permit/planning permission granted).

I am curious to know when the right time is to order or plan the kitchen, as some companies reportedly take 4-5 months. What are your experiences?

Best regards

You need to start planning the kitchen early because when pouring the concrete slab, it must be clear where the drains will go. So you have to decide where the sink and other fixtures will be located. This doesn’t mean ordering yet, but planning ahead. We planned our kitchen with IKEA and saved it in their system. Once the screed and plaster are done, we access the plan. IKEA sends someone to take measurements, and if everything matches the plan, it’s a go. The delivery time is then 14 days. We could actually pick it up immediately since everything is in stock, but we prefer delivery and installation through IKEA.

I promise you, when planning and buying a kitchen, you will face some real challenges—that’s what ultimately led us to the “yellow Swede.” They want to make sales, of course, but at least they do it respectfully and without gimmicks like “if you buy today only, the manager will include the dishwasher for free.” And if you say it’s still too expensive, they reply, “Good quality has its price, but I can talk to the manager again to see if anything else is possible.” Then you would just have to sign something.

I’ve heard this from several people now, so this should be interesting...
Basically, I can start by planning with the preliminary plans and then, when the time comes, have the measurements checked, possibly corrected, and finally place the order.

Does anyone have experience with granite countertops? Regarding the price, etc.
I’m just beginning to look into this.

Are you building with a general contractor (GC) or with an architect?

We had to provide our home builder with the finalized kitchen plan during the planning phase because the building permit / planning permission application also includes drainage, so the water lines needed to be fixed at that point.

I would plan and order the kitchen first—there will be plenty of other time-consuming tasks later on. Minor changes can always be made mid-year.

If you haven’t already focused on the kitchen in the planning phase, it might take a while to achieve the best layout for ergonomic food preparation.

Yvonne, the optimum ergonomic setup for food preparation is quickly figured out for the male part of humanity. Phone for pizza delivery, the Burger King app, the microwave, the tripod grill model Landmann—always a popular choice. Plus, a can opener for really tough days, Ravioli Maggi are the best, I’m telling you, nothing else compares.

So, kitchens are somewhat overrated. Karsten

Unfortunately, a problem of an older generation! In our entire circle of acquaintances, men do the cooking, while women do so less often.
