ᐅ Why do the doors on the Kallax units always hang crooked?

Hello everyone,

I have installed doors on several Kallax shelving units from Ikea, and I keep noticing that the doors never hang perfectly straight. They always seem to be slightly crooked or warped, so they don’t close flush.

So my question is: Why do the doors on Kallax units always hang crooked? Are there structural reasons related to the shelving or the doors themselves? Or is it due to the installation, the hinges, or possibly material warping? I’m interested if anyone has solid experience or knows the causes, because this issue is repeatable for me and particularly annoying during use, as it looks unsightly and the doors don’t close properly.

I’m grateful for any explanations, tips for fixing this, or advice!

How do you handle a door that is extremely crooked and can no longer be adjusted?

If adjusting is no longer sufficient, I recommend the following steps:

1. Check whether the frame is truly level and not warped (wall, floor, installation area).
2. If the frame is fine, carefully inspect the hinge holes for proper alignment.
3. You can drill new holes with slight offsets of a few millimeters (inches) to better align the door. However, this should only be done if you are certain it will not cause other structural issues.

I would advise against sanding, as it alters the surfaces and can create uneven gaps.

The simplest solution remains adjusting the existing hinges and occasional fine-tuning.

Thanks for the tip.

However, that sounds quite involved, and of course, I don’t want to lose any stability or warranty.

Are there any experiences regarding whether frequent adjustments to the hinges cause premature wear or enlargement of the holes?

Maybe this can already be improved by careful fine-tuning without damaging the frame?

On mechanical stress from frequent adjustments:

The hinges are made of metal with sheet metal and plastic parts, so the screws can withstand considerable stress. However, it is true that with too frequent adjustments—especially when overloaded due to a warped cabinet frame—the holes in particleboard or MDF can become worn over time.

This is particularly the case if screws are tightened too forcefully or if the material is exposed to temperature and humidity fluctuations.

For a long-term solution, it is important to ensure the shelf is set up stable and level, and to adjust the doors using moderate force.

Briefly to conclude:

A misaligned Kallax door is usually the result of a combination of minimal manufacturing tolerances, material properties (MDF, moisture, weight of the door), and the structure/floor.

With the right adjustments to the hinges and a check of the installation, the issue can often be largely fixed.

If that is not enough, more precise reworking is necessary, such as pre-drilling or realigning the cabinet.
