Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy bookshelf and noticed that the doors do not close properly. They sometimes get stuck or are misaligned, especially at the top. I suspect the doors need to be readjusted. My question is: How can I correctly readjust the Billy doors if they stick or don’t close flush? Are there any special tricks or tools needed, and how can I ensure the doors stay properly aligned long-term? I look forward to any helpful advice!

Hello gumonu, your question is very precise, which already helps a lot! Basically, Billy cabinet doors are adjustable at the hinges. At Ikea, these are usually concealed 3-point hinges that can be adjusted in three dimensions: height, depth, and lateral alignment. If doors stick, it is often because the depth or height adjustment is not optimal. You open the door, remove the covers over the hinge screws, and then carefully turn the appropriate screw to realign the door. It is important to open and close the door several times after adjustment so the position can settle. A small Phillips screwdriver is usually sufficient as a tool.

Here is a more detailed guide for adjusting the Billy cabinet doors:

1. Open the door and remove the covers (caps) from the hinges.
2. Turn the screw that moves the door sideways to adjust the gap between the door and the cabinet frame.
3. Adjust the screw that raises or lowers the door if it sticks at the top.
4. Use the third screw to move the door in depth so that it closes flush.

Typically, the screws are clearly visible. Please proceed carefully and make small adjustments. Excessive force can damage the hinges. If you like, I can also provide tips on how to avoid annoying noises or readjust if the doors settle over time.

Interesting that you mention this, gumonu. However, I wonder if the issue could also be related to the installation itself when doors stick. Often with Billy, the carcass is built slightly uneven or not properly aligned, which creates pressure on the doors. Adjusting only the doors might then treat the symptom, not the cause. Have you checked if the shelf is perfectly level and if the side panels are flat? Sometimes, small shims at the wall fixings can also help.

I have checked that; the shelf stands straight against the wall, and the walls are not warped. Although it’s not a professional installation, I carefully assembled it according to the instructions. I haven’t adjusted the hinges yet, as I thought a little fine-tuning might be possible without much expert knowledge.

Open the door, remove the cover caps, then slightly loosen the screws on the hinge with a Phillips screwdriver. Adjust sideways, upwards, and forwards until the door fits properly. That’s all there is to it.
