Hello everyone, I am planning to remodel my Ikea Hemnes wardrobe soon, specifically to adjust the doors and the interior layout. Before I get started, I want to make sure I have the right tools on hand. My question is: What tools are ideally needed to professionally remodel an Ikea Hemnes wardrobe? I am interested in the basic toolset as well as any helpful specialized tools that could make the remodeling easier. Tips on tool brands or experiences with certain devices are also very welcome!

Is it hardboard or particleboard? The back panel of my Hemnes cabinet is made of a thin hardboard, about 3mm (0.1 inch) thick. Pre-drilling with a countersink drill bit sounds like a good idea to prevent splitting. Is there any recommendation regarding the size of the screw or drill bit? I don’t want to pre-drill too large to maintain a good grip.
For a 3mm (0.12 inch) hardboard panel, a drill bit with a diameter of about 2mm (0.08 inch) is recommended to avoid tension and prevent splitting. Screws should not be too thick – a diameter of 3 to 3.5mm (0.12 to 0.14 inch) is suitable. A countersink drill with a slight countersink cutter is also useful for clean screw heads.
Thank you for the tips! To summarize, I now have on my checklist:
- Cordless screwdriver with Phillips bits
- Fine-toothed handsaw or jigsaw
- Sandpaper (180-220 grit)
- Drill bits (2 millimeters (0.08 inches)) and countersink attachment
- Screws 3-3.5 millimeters (0.12-0.14 inches) suitable for the back panel
- Possibly edge protectors
Is there anything else that is often overlooked in a Hemnes modification but makes the work easier? Especially regarding door installation and hinge adjustments?

Great list! When it comes to hinges, a small screwdriver with a magnetic tip makes a big difference, as it sometimes prevents screws from falling. Also, a square for precisely aligning the doors is very helpful to ensure everything fits perfectly. Good luck, you’ve got this!
