Hello everyone, I’m currently looking into how Ikea Hemnes furniture can be optimized specifically for small hallways. The Hemnes series is generally quite solid and sturdy, which can often be a challenge for narrow, confined entrance areas. I’m especially interested in ways to modify or complement the furniture so that the available space is used as efficiently as possible without making the hallway feel cramped. Adjustments in depth or height might be helpful, as well as multifunctionality or clever storage solutions. What ideas or experiences do you have to make Hemnes products more user-friendly and space-saving for small hallways? Looking forward to your suggestions!

An important improvement for Hemnes furniture in small hallways, in my opinion, is to reduce the depth of the pieces. The series is known for its sturdy construction, which results in quite substantial dimensions. Consider making some elements shallower or developing narrower versions. Likewise, slim wall-mounted options, such as hanging shelves or coat racks that keep the floor clear, could be a good alternative to balance comfort and space efficiency.

Hook rails attached to the side of the furniture might help. This way, you make more efficient use of the wall space.

It is definitely worth carefully measuring the space as well as the Hemnes furniture and then planning in detail. Although the Hemnes series is sturdy, some cabinets are quite deep due to the multi-layered carcass construction. For the hallway, I recommend considering the following steps:

- Determine the minimum possible depth: Hemnes dressers generally have a depth of about 48 cm (19 inches). Small hallways benefit when this is reduced to around 30–35 cm (12–14 inches). A modification option could be removing the back panel, shortening the side panels accordingly, and attaching a narrower front from the front.

- Height variation: A combination of lower shoe cabinets with open shelves mounted on top creates a more open feel. Different heights prevent the wall from feeling cluttered while increasing storage space vertically.

- Alternative doors: Hemnes furniture features doors with classic frames that protrude quite a bit. Replacing them with very flat or frameless doors, or sliding doors, is excellent for reducing the clearance needed in the hallway.

- Multifunctional elements: For example, seating options on shoe cabinets with integrated padding, or lockable compartments with built-in mirrors for quick checks before going out.

I am interested in the exact measurements of your hallway and whether you plan changes to the furniture itself or rather additions such as accessories, lighting, etc.?

Thank you for the detailed response! My hallway is about 120 cm (47 inches) wide and just under 250 cm (98 inches) long. A mobile shoe cabinet with a maximum depth of 30–35 cm (12–14 inches) would be perfect there, but that’s exactly what I like less about the Hemnes series, since it is usually deeper. Modifications to the furniture itself would be possible; ideally, I would adjust the width and depth without compromising stability. Accessories and lighting would be a nice extra, but my main priority is optimizing the available space.

To optimize Hemnes furniture for small hallways, I recommend the following practical approach:

- First, carefully measure the pieces you plan to use and, if necessary, adjust the depth yourself with a jigsaw or circular saw. The Hemnes series is mostly made of solid pine wood, which allows for precise work.

- If you decide to modify the depth, it is advisable to either completely remove the back panel or replace it with a thinner material. This can save several centimeters (inches).

- Make sure to sand the edges well after cutting and match the color, as Hemnes furniture is often painted.

- For more storage space, a combination of tall, narrow cabinets with open shelves above is recommended. This utilizes the height while taking up very little additional width.

- Adding narrow wall-mounted hook rails on the side of the furniture or directly on the wall where there are no Hemnes pieces also helps efficiently organize coats and bags.

Common mistakes include not measuring accurately before cutting and failing to reinforce the furniture after shortening, which can lead to instability. Important: If possible, use wood panels of similar thickness to maintain a uniform appearance.

Do you have a detailed list of the furniture items you want to modify?
