Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a cabinet from the IKEA Hemnes series. After putting it together, the cabinet wobbles noticeably, especially when pulling on the door or giving it a light tap. The wobbling is more than just a slight sway; it feels generally unstable. I followed the instructions carefully, tightened all the screws, and installed the back panel. Still, the problem persists.

My main question is: What are the possible causes of such wobbling specifically with Hemnes furniture after assembly? And most importantly, what can I do to improve the stability without having to completely disassemble the cabinet? Are there any special tips regarding fasteners, the use of washers, or leveling on the floor (e.g., uneven surface)?

I look forward to your experiences and helpful advice!

If the cabinet wobbles despite having the back panel installed, the screws at the corner joints are often not fully tightened. Check all connections and retighten each screw with the appropriate tool. It is also worth placing felt pads or small washers under the feet on uneven floors.

Wobbling in furniture like the HEMNES can have various causes that should be checked systematically. I always start by making sure the back panel lies flat and is securely nailed in place – with IKEA furniture, the back panel is often fixed only with small nails that can come loose easily or may not be pressed firmly enough.

Besides the back panel, you should inspect the side corner joints: IKEA often uses dowels combined with screws and metal connectors (Minifix), which all need to fit precisely. Even the slightest gaps or screws that aren’t tightened enough can cause noticeable wobbling later on.

The floor surface is also crucial: an uneven floor means that one corner point may not be properly supported, causing the unit to rock. Furniture pads or small shims usually help here. Have you checked whether all the base feet actually touch the floor?

If the unit is placed against a wall, it is recommended to use the included wall fasteners. Even if the wobbling affects only the legs of a table, wall brackets provide significant stabilization.

In general, it’s worth studying the HEMNES assembly instructions closely, as they include details on tightening connection screws. I wonder: did you make sure the metal connectors were screwed in all the way? Often they already feel “tight,” but turning them another quarter turn can add stability.

Alternatively, you could try loosening the joints, reassembling the parts, and paying special attention to the fit of the wooden dowels. Sometimes a dowel is slightly misaligned or wasn’t properly embedded during the initial assembly.

Check that all anchors are properly installed and that there are no dents or damage to the wood surface. Movement often results from connectors that are not fully fitted or from missing or loose wall fixings.

I can really understand your frustration! The wobbling can be quite unsettling, especially when you’ve put a lot of effort into assembling it. I experienced the same with a HEMNES wardrobe. What helped me was loosening the back panel and securing it again with some additional small nails — IKEA doesn’t necessarily recommend this, but it noticeably improved the stability.

I also leveled the wardrobe using a spirit level and placed small felt pads under the feet on the floor. This made it stand firmly and eliminated the annoying wobbling issue.

From a technical perspective, wobbling in a HEMNES cabinet is almost always due to one of the following causes:

- Connection screws on side panels or bottom parts not fully tightened
- Insufficient securing of the back panel, which is a key element for stability and must be flat and firmly fixed
- Unevenness of the floor surface reducing the contact area of the furniture
- Missing or improperly installed wall fasteners to prevent tipping

The procedure should be carried out in the following order:
1. Check and tighten all connectors
2. Inspect the back panel for proper fit and firmness (re-nail or glue if necessary)
3. Check the furniture’s contact points with a level and use shims or felt pads as needed
4. Install the included wall brackets

These steps should significantly improve the stability.
