faharrison14 Dec 2020 08:13Hello everyone,
I am interested in suggestions for improvements to the IKEA Hemnes furniture, as I own some pieces and know they are a popular choice for many users. I am particularly curious about practical modifications or design optimizations that could make daily use easier or increase durability. Are there specific items you have noticed where IKEA should make improvements? Are there common weak points that could be fixed with minor changes? And which features do you think are missing that could be easily added? I look forward to your concrete ideas and critiques so that Hemnes furniture can be used in an even more thoughtful way.

I think more attention should be paid to the back panels of the Hemnes cabinets. They are often too thin and tend to warp during transport or assembly. A sturdier back panel would improve durability.
Additionally, it would be helpful if IKEA provided better assembly instructions with more detail to help avoid mistakes. This is especially important for less experienced users.

The issue with the back panel is very relevant. From a technical perspective, the Hemnes wardrobes would benefit from reinforcement through a keyed edge strengthening instead of just a thin MDF or particleboard back. This would increase stability while keeping the weight low.
Additionally, the hinges should ideally be fully adjustable without tools – this would greatly simplify fine-tuning during assembly, which some current models do not support.
Another potential upgrade would be a smoother surface treatment to reduce scratch sensitivity. Heavily used edges could, for example, be coated with a more durable paint finish.

The point about the back panel is very relevant.I agree – a structural bracing, as you described, could indeed be very helpful.
Regarding hinges: Does anyone have practical experience with alternative or additional hinge solutions to simplify assembly and adjustment? I’m also interested in whether Hemnes has received any updates in recent years.
