Hello everyone, I am planning to buy an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and wanted to ask if there are any proven tips or methods for assembling this furniture on your own, without external help? I am especially interested in how to handle the heavy or bulky parts more easily and if there are any experiences regarding which steps should definitely be done in which order to make the assembly as smooth as possible. I would appreciate any advice!

Thanks for the tips so far! I’m also wondering if it makes sense to do dry runs with particularly large parts like doors or side panels beforehand, meaning to position them temporarily without screwing. Or is it better to start screwing right away to avoid any deformation? Also, how do you handle it when the instructions are vague in certain steps? Do you prefer to make additional sketches or take photos?

The topic of assembling large furniture pieces like Hemnes is complex. Your idea of dry runs is very sensible. Especially with bulky or heavy components, it can help to first check how the parts fit together without permanently fixing them. This way, you avoid later adjustments that require more effort. If the instructions are unclear, I recommend carefully studying the schematic drawings before each step and laying out the parts in the room accordingly. Sometimes, simply rearranging the parts helps to better understand the structure and sequence. For critical fittings, it also helps to check whether the drill holes and connecting parts are precisely positioned before tightening screws. Another tip: placing a folded cloth under heavy parts protects against scratches and provides some grip when positioning the pieces. What exactly do you mean by vague wording? Can you give a specific example step?

Thank you for the detailed response. Specifically, I often find the step of attaching the back panel of a HEMNES wardrobe confusing, especially since the side panels are supposed to remain movable to allow for proper adjustment later. The instructions only say "attach the back panel" without any indication of temporary fixing. I wonder whether it’s better to temporarily fix the back panel with just a few nails, or if fully nailing it is recommended. How have you handled this?

I initially secure the back wall temporarily with a few nails until everything is aligned. Once everything is correct, the nails can be replaced to ensure a stable connection.

Temporary nailing is helpful. It allows you to make small adjustments and prevents stress in the components.

That sounds very practical, thank you! I will try it that way. From the other advice, I also take away that preparation is key, especially regarding tools, clothing, and the entire workspace. By the way, would it be advisable to pay attention to torque settings on the cordless drill when using long screws? My device has a relatively high torque level, and I want to avoid causing any damage.
