Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the installation of my IKEA Metod kitchen units and am wondering about the optimal screw lengths to use. Although IKEA provides some examples in the instructions, in my experience these recommendations are often quite general.

Therefore, I am interested in which screw lengths you specifically use—especially for connecting side panels with shelves and backs, or for mounting the wall cabinets.

I would also like to know how the screw length affects stability and whether there are any risks in using screws that are too long or too short.

Could you please share your experiences or recommendations? Are there perhaps differences depending on the screw materials, such as wood screws versus particleboard screws?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

For concrete walls: 6x100 mm (4x4 inches) anchors and screws. This provides sufficient support for tall cabinets with weight.

For carcass parts, 4x35 to 4x40 mm (1.4 to 1.6 inches) screws are enough.

Not too short, and not too long either.

For my Metod kitchen, I used 4x40 mm (1.6 inches) screws for the cabinet parts and 6x100 mm (3.9 inches) screws for mounting on the concrete wall. Recommendation: It’s better to use 100 mm (3.9 inches) screws for wall mounting, as they hold more securely than using screws that are just barely the right size.

A small tip from me: If you want to optimize the screw length for Metod, aim for around 4x40mm (approximately 4x1.6 inches) for the connections and 6x100mm (about 6x4 inches) for wall mounting (matching good anchors), then you’ll be on the safe side.

I had no problems at all this way, and my kitchen is rock solid.

And yes, a good eye is important – the screw shouldn’t push through the material but should go deep enough for maximum stability.
