Hello everyone,

I’m facing the challenge of choosing a suitable Ikea PAX wardrobe for my rental apartment. I’m especially interested in which models or versions from the PAX series are, in my opinion, best suited for rental properties. Important factors for me are easy assembly and disassembly, so that no major damage occurs during moving, as well as flexibility in dimensions to adapt the wardrobe well to different room sizes. Additionally, I want to make sure the wardrobe doesn’t look too bulky while still offering enough storage space.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations on which PAX models are particularly suitable for rental apartments? Are there any tips on how to assemble or extend the wardrobes in a way that stays simple?

I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences!

That actually sounds very interesting, especially because of the space-saving aspect during installation. However, I would also like to know how durable the sliding doors are compared to hinged doors with frequent use. Do you or anyone else have experience with this?

That’s a good point, which I hadn’t thought of before. How complex is the dismantling process for sliding doors in general? Are the track systems delicate or robust enough for multiple assemblies and disassemblies?

I used my Pax with sliding doors for several years, including daily use. The doors still operate smoothly, though over time they may need some minor adjustments – nothing too difficult.

The advantage is that you don’t need doors that swing outward and take up a lot of space, which is especially great for small apartments. The sliding doors are sturdy, but mechanically a bit more prone to wear than simple hinged doors. You should consider that.

The tracks are made of metal and quite robust. Of course, every setup and takedown causes some wear, but with careful handling, they hold up well through multiple reassemblies. They fit nicely into the category of "very sturdy for a rental apartment."

Regarding the suitability of PAX models for rental apartments, I consider the following points important:

- It is best to use frames that are 50 cm (20 inches) and 75 cm (30 inches) wide, as these sizes are flexible and suitable for most room dimensions.
- Choose models without back panels fixed to the wall, or avoid shelves that are very difficult to dismantle.
- Sliding doors save space but are more prone to damage during moves due to the guide rails compared to hinged doors.
- In general, it is recommended to divide the wardrobe into several modules to make transport and assembly easier.

These points are based on multiple cases I have handled; in rental apartments, flexibility and modular construction prove to be most beneficial.

I would confirm the advice to choose several smaller PAX units and expand them flexibly. This makes moving much easier, especially if you might relocate more often.

To summarize the idea clearly:

- PAX units with customizable interiors are ideal, as you can later replace shelves, drawers, or clothes rails as needed.
- Avoid overly tall items (over 201 cm (79 inches)) because they often cause difficulties during transport.
- For the doors: hinged doors are more durable during assembly and disassembly, although they require a bit more space to open.
- Sliding doors are especially suitable for tight spaces but tend to be more delicate due to the track system.

My recommendation would be to choose hinged doors in case of doubt and to size the modules smaller rather than larger in width.

Exactly, that’s why it’s wise to be careful during installation and removal. But if you keep that in mind, the PAX sliding doors are excellent for smaller rental apartments.

Additionally, a few felt pads at the base can help protect the floor, preserving the landlord’s parquet flooring and avoiding issues when moving out.
