Hello everyone, I’m planning to integrate an Ikea Pax wardrobe into my new rental apartment, but I have concerns about the often limited wall mounting options and the possible damage to the apartment. Therefore, I’m particularly interested in the question: Which Ikea Pax wardrobe models are recommended for rental apartments if, first, you need flexibility in assembly and installation, and second, you want the least invasive option for the apartment? It would also be helpful if you could share your experiences regarding the weight, stability, and different interior layout options. Thanks for your individual assessments!

Hello sefo7, I can really relate to your situation, as I also live in a rental apartment and love the Pax wardrobe, but sometimes feel uneasy about drilling. What has worked best for me in rental apartments are the narrower Pax frames with shelving doors instead of the heavy sliding doors – this puts less strain on the structure and they are easier to install or take apart if you need to move. Additionally, I got removable fixings that don’t leave visible damage. Of course, it’s never ideal, but it works well and keeps the walls mostly intact.

I think it is important not only to collect tips here but also to critically evaluate how the wardrobe models actually perform. For example, attention should be paid not only to stability but also to the load on the fixing points. In rental apartments, some experts advise against sliding door systems because the top running rails need to be firmly anchored into the wall. A good compromise might be a Pax wardrobe with hinged doors, which can be positioned more flexibly in the room without drilling too deeply into the walls. So: less mounting, more stackability!

Hey sefo7! I also have my Pax system in my rented apartment and find it really practical. I chose a combination of narrow carcasses and open shelves because that way I don’t have to deal with doors all the time. I also think it saves weight, so you don’t have to basically mortar every millimeter of the wall 😂. Important: use proper assembly and the right wall plugs! Otherwise, it gets wobbly. But have you also considered whether to go for the standard depths of 35 or 58 cm (14 or 23 inches)? Because that also affects the stability and usable space.

For rental apartments, it is especially important to minimize wall load caused by wardrobes. The Ikea Pax series offers two main depths: 35 cm (14 inches) and 58 cm (23 inches). Models with a depth of 35 cm (14 inches) are lighter and require fewer fixings. Sliding doors require strong wall brackets, which can often be problematic in rental properties. Hinged door models have the advantage that they remain fairly stable even without wall mounting. To reduce damage, I recommend following the installation instructions carefully and using appropriate wall anchors for the building material. Additionally, alternative fixing methods or feet can help reduce the load on the wall.

Great topic! I can only confirm: the Pax wardrobe models with open shelving systems or light hinged doors are perfect, especially if you move frequently or want to avoid damaging the walls. 😊 A small tip from me: you can optionally leave out the back panel to save weight, as long as stability is ensured by other means! This way, the Pax becomes a real all-rounder even in rental apartments and still looks fantastic! You’ve got this!
