Hello everyone,

I am planning to install an Ikea PAX system in a room that is unfortunately quite prone to humidity (for example, partly insufficiently heated, with occasional humidity levels above 70%). My question to the community is: which Ikea PAX doors are best suited for rooms with high or fluctuating humidity levels?

I understand that wood and MDF can have issues with moisture, so I am particularly interested in whether there are doors with special surface coatings or made from different materials that are more resistant to warping, mold, or damage.

Are there any experiences with specific models, perhaps glass or plastic doors? Or any tips for care and maintenance in such environments?

Thanks for your insights and recommendations!

Hello nire1,

Your question is very important, as PAX systems are usually equipped with wooden doors or MDF fronts, which can be sensitive to moisture. In principle: the smoother and denser the surface, the better the protection against moisture.

Typical PAX doors are made of particleboard with melamine or foil coatings, which can swell under constant high humidity. Especially classic wooden doors or lacquered fronts are moisture-sensitive, as moisture can penetrate and cause cracks or warping.

A sturdy alternative are PAX sliding doors with glass fronts. These often consist of safety glass with aluminum frames, which is the best choice in terms of household use since glass itself is water-resistant. However, you need to check whether the sealing and profiles in the room do not absorb too much moisture.

What I would like to ask: What are the expected maximum levels of humidity? Is the room regularly ventilated, is there permanent water contact (e.g., laundry room), or is it rather condensation moisture?

The care of the doors also plays a role: Cleaning with a damp cloth followed by drying is highly recommended to prevent moisture from lingering on the surface.

In summary:
- Glass or metal-framed sliding doors are most suitable
- High-quality foil-coated doors may be sufficient with good maintenance
- Solid wood doors are rather unsuitable

I hope this helps for now!

That’s true, which is why it’s especially important to choose smooth, non-porous surfaces for rooms prone to moisture. I once had a PAX door with a laminate and foil coating in a basement storage room—it held up well under moderate humidity conditions.

Also, when assembling, make sure the doors and the frame are at least 5 cm (2 inches) away from any direct walls and that the area is regularly ventilated, as stagnant air can quickly cause problems.

If you opt for glass doors, they are indeed easier to maintain and more resistant to moisture; however, keep in mind that glass tends to be colder and can develop condensation on the surface when the room temperature fluctuates in high humidity.

If you want more tips on optimal maintenance, I’m happy to help!

Hello,

I would like to add some information regarding the material properties:

PAX doors are generally made from MDF or particleboard, both of which are highly sensitive to moisture. Only the smooth foil or high-gloss fronts sometimes offer increased protection, but they are not completely water-resistant.

For wet areas, I recommend avoiding doors with a painted MDF surface, as paint provides some protection, but even minor damage can allow moisture to penetrate, causing the door to swell.

As an alternative, PAX sliding doors with safety glass, either frosted or clear, are particularly suitable. These glass options are not only resistant but also very easy to maintain. However, proper ventilation is always necessary in damp rooms, since otherwise the cabinet carcass can also be damaged.

So, when it comes to the highest moisture resistance, glass is the best choice, followed by foil coating. Another option is to apply water-repellent treatments, although Ikea does not offer these as standard.

Best regards.

Glass fronts are definitely the best solution. No issues with moisture, and easy to clean.

Doors with a foil coating are also acceptable, but avoid placing them directly against the wall to prevent moisture buildup.

Correct, it is also important to mention that for glass sliding doors, the tracks and seals should be inspected regularly, as moisture can penetrate there and cause corrosion over time.

Furthermore, the internal structure of the carcass is very important: PAX carcasses are made of particleboard with melamine foil, and moisture can damage the carcass if ventilation is inadequate, even if the door itself is resistant.

Are you prepared to ensure proper ventilation and maintenance? What is the exact nature of the room (e.g., basement, bathroom, laundry room)?
