Hello everyone,

I am planning to install an Ikea PAX system in a room that is unfortunately quite prone to humidity (for example, partly insufficiently heated, with occasional humidity levels above 70%). My question to the community is: which Ikea PAX doors are best suited for rooms with high or fluctuating humidity levels?

I understand that wood and MDF can have issues with moisture, so I am particularly interested in whether there are doors with special surface coatings or made from different materials that are more resistant to warping, mold, or damage.

Are there any experiences with specific models, perhaps glass or plastic doors? Or any tips for care and maintenance in such environments?

Thanks for your insights and recommendations!

Hello,

my experience with PAX doors in humid environments is that standard wooden and MDF doors tend to show damage quite quickly when the humidity regularly exceeds 65-70%. Typical warping and swelling occur due to moisture absorption in the material, which is unfortunately only minimally delayed by paint or veneers.

A good alternative from my own practice are PAX sliding doors with tempered glass panels, which are permanently water-resistant and do not deform. Suggestion: choose doors with aluminum frames and glass, as these profiles are significantly more moisture-resistant than wood.

Also important: during installation, the gap between the wall and the cabinet should be at least 5 cm (2 inches) to allow air circulation, and the room should be regularly ventilated through airing.

Additionally, I recommend checking door handles and hinges regularly for rust, as these components can also fail in high humidity.

Wishing you much success with your project!

Hey nire1!

I just wanted to say: I have my PAX sliding doors with glass in my laundry room, and I’m really happy with them! They still look great after two years, despite the high humidity. Just wipe them down occasionally with a damp cloth, and that’s it.

Go for the glass door—they are much more durable than wooden doors. Do it, you won’t regret it!

Use glass fronts, no wooden doors.

Important: optimize ventilation.

This way, you stay on the safe side.

In summary, based on the facts:

- PAX doors made of MDF or particleboard are problematic in humid environments, as they tend to swell.
- High-gloss foil fronts offer limited protection but can allow moisture to penetrate through minor surface damage.
- Glass sliding doors with aluminum frames are the best choice for moisture-prone rooms, as glass itself is waterproof.
- Adequate air circulation behind and around the wardrobe is essential to prevent condensation.
- Regular maintenance and inspection of fittings and hinges for corrosion is necessary.
- In rooms without constant air circulation, even doors with glass fronts cannot fully prevent moisture damage.

My advice: Choose glass sliding doors if possible, ensure good room ventilation, install the unit with a gap from the wall, and pay attention to the quality of the fittings.
