Hello everyone,

I am planning to redecorate my son’s bedroom and am considering the IKEA Pax wardrobe. My question is: Is the IKEA Pax wardrobe really suitable for a child’s room?

I am particularly interested in whether the wardrobe is safe enough for children (keyword: anti-tip protection), if the interior layout is flexible enough for changing storage needs (clothes, toys), and whether the material and craftsmanship are durable enough for a child’s room, where furniture can sometimes be treated a bit roughly.

I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or concerns, and also any suggestions for alternatives if the Pax might not be ideal.

Thank you in advance!

I love the Pax! It’s perfect for children’s rooms because you can really customize it completely to your needs! The combination options are huge—you can mix shelves, drawers, and clothes rails.

Tip-over protection is important, but other than that, it’s a lot of fun. Especially as kids grow older, it adapts really well! Go for it—the Pax is great!

Objectively, the Pax has the following advantages and disadvantages for a children's room:

+ Versatility thanks to an optional interior system
+ Relatively durable surfaces and MDF construction
+ Anti-tip feature included as standard, but proper installation is essential

- Material: MDF with laminate, not ideal for high humidity
- Sliding doors are more expensive but recommended for children
- Risk of injury without soft-closing mechanisms, e.g., finger trapping

Overall, the wardrobe is suitable if safety precautions are followed.

One important point I would like to add: Assembling the Pax can be challenging, especially with more complex combinations. I recommend allowing enough time for assembly or considering professional help.

It is also helpful that individual modules can be reordered if something breaks. This is especially practical for children's furniture.

Regarding durability: Of course, there can be scratches with rough use, but that is normal. It depends on how well it is maintained. Don’t forget the tip-over protection, then everything will be fine.

Tip: For small children, it’s better to choose sliding doors (available with Pax) to reduce the risk of pinching.

That is interesting, as sliding doors also have their drawbacks. They can easily come off the track and are more difficult to clean and repair compared to traditional doors. This should also be taken into account, especially if the wardrobe is used frequently.

That is correct. Additionally, it is important to check whether the sliding doors are equipped with a soft-close mechanism. Without this feature, the risk of finger injuries is higher. Dampers are very useful in this case.
