Hello everyone, I am currently planning a new wardrobe solution from Ikea and have a specific question about the Pax series range: Are there Pax options at Ikea that come with both sliding doors and hinged doors?

My main concern is whether within the Pax range the modules and doors are designed so that you can flexibly combine or exchange sliding doors and hinged doors, or if these door types are generally sold separately in different sets or versions.

How exactly is the range structured at Ikea regarding these door types? Are there any special adjustments needed to fit hinged doors if you originally chose sliding doors?

I’m looking forward to your experiences and detailed information – also welcome are tips on assembly or any particular features or limitations depending on the type of door.

As someone who always appreciates flexible solutions, I understand the desire for mixed variations with Pax. However, since Ikea provides clear guidelines in this case, only creative thinking helps:

- two carcasses side by side with different doors
- use modular interior fittings yourself and choose doors according to personal preferences

A small tip: Sliding doors save space but are a bit more difficult to clean – hinged doors take up more space but create a more open feel in the room.

Thank you very much for the detailed answers and clear explanations.

To sum up for myself: Ikea offers Pax doors either as sliding doors or hinged doors, which cannot be combined without modification. Therefore, when purchasing, you have to choose between these two options.

A combination is only possible by placing cabinets with different door types side by side or through custom adjustments. I will take this into account in my planning.

Does anyone have experience with changing sliding doors to hinged doors or vice versa afterwards? Are there any common pitfalls?

Regarding the question about changing the doors afterwards: technically, it is possible but quite complex. You need to replace the entire door system (for sliding doors, the tracks; for hinged doors, the hinges), and you might also require different drillings on the side panels or have to fill existing holes.

Additionally, the door dimensions usually do not allow for a direct one-to-one replacement. You must take the wardrobe’s width, height, and depth into account for your new door type; otherwise, the new doors will not fit properly.

I strongly recommend carefully reviewing the installation manuals for both types of doors before planning a replacement. The hinge and track systems are not compatible, which often raises questions about relocating the mounting points. Material wear can also be an issue, especially regarding the frame and side panels.

Another common pitfall is that replacing the doors later usually costs more than buying a new cabinet with the correct door type from the start.
