Hello everyone,
I am considering replacing the doors of my Ikea PAX wardrobe with glass doors. Specifically, I am wondering: is it possible to swap the existing PAX doors for suitable glass doors without major modifications?
I am looking for answers regarding technical compatibility, potential installation issues, and experiences on whether this is a recommendable option. For example, are there specific glass door models that fit PAX wardrobes directly, or are additional adapters or hinges required?
I understand that the standard PAX doors are usually made of wood or MDF panels and have a fixed frame. But what about the stability and safety of glass doors? Are there any experiences regarding how easily the doors might break, or whether the hinges of the PAX furniture can handle them at all?
I look forward to your knowledge and advice!

I believe this shouldn’t be based solely on appearance. Glass doors can be more fragile and also significantly change the feeling of the room.
That sounds reasonable, but do you have a source or personal experience to back that up? Since PAX systems are modular, might there still be some kind of workaround?
It would be interesting to know whether the effort involved in installation is justified considering durability, or if upgrading is mostly just an aesthetic luxury.

Direct replacement is usually not possible because glass doors require different fittings.

Hello Nello,
I’ll try to clarify things a bit. Basically, PAX wardrobe doors are either made from wood-like materials or, for mirrored or glass elements, can also be purchased directly from Ikea.
This means Ikea already offers glass doors for their PAX modules that fit perfectly. These are designed so that the hinges, drill holes, and dimensions match the PAX frames exactly.
However, if you want to remove the existing wooden doors and replace them with glass doors bought from third-party suppliers, there are a few challenges:
- Hinges are specifically installed; glass often requires different fasteners, such as clamp systems or special hinges.
- Glass is heavier and more delicate, which can put extra strain on the wardrobe structure and hinges.
- Safety glass is recommended to prevent any risk of injury.
I would suggest either ordering the glass doors directly from Ikea or switching to custom-made solutions with appropriate hinges.
If anyone has experience with custom glass doors, I’d also appreciate hearing about it.

That sounds really exciting! I’ve modified my PAX wardrobe myself and can only say: if you’re looking for a sleeker, more modern design, glass doors are a great idea! 😄
I replaced my doors with frosted glass panels. The change was a bit tricky since I had to adjust the hinges, but with a screwdriver and some patience, it works! It also makes the room much brighter than I expected.
So: go for it, give it a try!

Hello Nello,
to approach the topic systematically:
- IKEA itself offers clear and frosted glass doors specifically designed for PAX systems. These come with suitable hinges that fit the PAX wardrobe structure.
- If you want to purchase glass doors yourself, make sure the drilling (for hinges or handles) matches your PAX frame. Otherwise, you will need custom drilling or adapters.
- Ensure the glass is safety glass to minimize the risk of injury.
- Since glass can be heavier than wood or MDF doors, check if the hinges can support the additional weight.
Overall, you should either choose IKEA doors or, when buying individually, know the exact dimensions of the wardrobe and coordinate with glaziers or window manufacturers.
I hope this helps you.
