Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me here. I am interested in Ikea’s Pax system because I need a wardrobe with flexible options. However, I am increasingly focusing on sustainability when it comes to furniture. Therefore, I would like to know specifically: Are there Pax variants or individual components made from sustainable materials? Not just generally eco-friendly, but specifically for Pax – for example, wood from FSC-certified sources, recycled materials, or other sustainable manufacturing processes. I want to avoid buying furniture that may seem affordable but was produced under questionable conditions. Thanks in advance for your opinions and maybe some insights on how Ikea addresses sustainability with the Pax system!

As far as I know, Pax does not offer any specific sustainable options. The material is usually particleboard with laminate. FSC-certified wood is more commonly used in other product lines.

Regarding sustainability of Ikea Pax: Ikea states that some components use FSC-certified wood, but this mostly refers to the wood panels. Many parts contain particleboard and laminated surfaces, which are not necessarily considered sustainable. Additionally, melamine coating is often used, which limits recyclability. Sustainability is more of a focus in newer Ikea product lines; Pax itself was not technically designed to be environmentally optimized.

To clarify this a bit more clearly: Pax is mainly made from particleboard, which is primarily produced from wood waste. This is not inherently wrong, as it is an efficient use of resources. Ikea states that the wood materials come from responsible forestry, often confirmed by FSC or PEFC certification. However, it should be noted that these boards also contain plastic coatings, which make recycling more difficult. If you want to be truly sustainable, you should specifically look for FSC-certified products and possibly ask Ikea sales staff directly about Pax components that carry these certifications.

I think this is an important topic – Ikea has recently been doing a lot for sustainability, including with Pax! Some doors and fronts are made from bamboo or FSC-certified wood, which I think is great. I personally own a Pax wardrobe with bamboo doors and am very pleased with it. So yes, there are options that are more sustainable, you just need to look carefully and get advice. It’s enjoyable to do something good for the environment!

For sustainable plant-based materials such as bamboo or certified wood, you should specifically ask for products with an FSC label. Ikea often indicates in the product details which parts contain sustainable materials. However, this cannot be generally stated for Pax.
