PudutarHello everyone, I am currently planning the layout of my new kitchen using the IKEA Metod system and am looking for ideas on how to complement or customize it effectively with DIY projects. I am especially interested in suggestions that work well with the modular design and typical structure of Metod. Are there smart additions, for example regarding space optimization, lighting, or surface finishing, that can be easily done as DIY? It is important to me that the DIY solutions do not put too much strain on the system but integrate well without compromising stability or functionality. Who has experience with this or can offer concrete tips on which DIY ideas are worth trying and practical to implement?
The question of which DIY ideas work well with the IKEA Metod kitchen system is quite complex, as Metod itself is a fairly standardized and modular system. I recommend first gaining a thorough understanding of the individual modules and their mounting systems to know where additions are possible. For example, LED strips can be easily installed under the wall cabinets; for this, you only need a suitable power source and simple covers made from aluminum profiles or custom-built wooden slats, cut precisely to the cabinet system dimensions. Integrating inner drawers or special compartments using homemade wooden boxes also fits well, especially when paying attention to the dimensions of the Metod drawers. Another idea is to use modular shelving systems that fit between the wall cabinets or are attached to the sides to fill niches. However, it is important to consider the load capacity and weight limits of the Metod system here. Additionally, changing the fronts is a great option: covering the fronts with films or customizing them with wooden handle strips creates a very personal look with little effort. By the way, do you have specific spatial conditions, such as a corner kitchen or long wall units? This greatly influences which DIY solutions make sense.
It is important to always observe the specified load limits and maintain the integrity of the frame structure when making DIY modifications to the Metod system. The material thicknesses and fastening methods are designed specifically for this system, so additional inserts or front modifications should be chosen carefully. A proven approach is, for example, using inner drawers made of lightweight material that are matched to the internal dimensions of the Metod carcasses. Attention should also be paid to the quality of the drawer slides. Custom-made shelves made of coated MDF are also recommended, as they can be used without complex alterations and allow flexible storage configurations. These can be easily placed or adjusted using shelf rails, which are commonly used in the Metod system. Even though applying front stickers or changing handles can alter the appearance, it is important to ensure that door movements are not obstructed.

However, I also understand how challenging it can be to get the right measurements. What often helps me is working with cardboard prototypes before making any cuts for real.

An important consideration for DIY modifications on the Metod system is always adhering to the specified load limits and maintaining the integrity of the frame structure. That’s a good point; when I was renovating my kitchen, I underestimated how important this is. Especially when adding things yourself, it can quickly cause problems.
Does anyone have tips on how to best check this? I’m not only talking about weight specifications in the manual, but whether there are ways to additionally reinforce the fastenings?
