Hello everyone,

I’m planning to install a larger kitchen using the IKEA Metod system in the coming weeks. I’ve noticed that assembling these modules, especially the cabinets and drawer systems, can often be quite tricky. I’m wondering if there are any “perfect guides” for the DIY assembly of IKEA Metod cabinets—meaning proven step-by-step instructions or tips that specifically make the installation easier, reduce potential errors, and possibly improve stability.

Do you have any experience or “best practices” for handling this process as efficiently and smoothly as possible? Particularly regarding the order of assembling the components, proper handling of the fronts, and the use of tools.

Looking forward to your opinions and advice!

Hello,

I would say: organization is key. Unpack the parts, sort them, and read the entire manual carefully. After that, it’s best to complete the assembly of each cabinet one by one instead of doing everything simultaneously.

Tools: A Phillips screwdriver and a cordless drill with adjustable torque settings are invaluable.

Hello Isamura,

I can definitely understand your question. The assembly of the IKEA Metod kitchen is initially quite straightforward, but there are many adjustments you can make to really simplify the process and achieve a clean result in the end.

I always recommend keeping the work surface clean and sufficiently large. It’s also worth sorting all screws and fasteners by size before starting the assembly. This saves time during the actual build.

Regarding the fronts: they are delicate, so if possible, install them only after the cabinets are in place to avoid ugly scratches.

Even though the instructions are fairly good, using small tools like a rubber mallet and a square can help provide temporary stability, especially with tall cabinets.

I’ve also had good experiences with the sequence of first assembling the base units, then the shelves, and finally installing the fronts and drawers.

In my opinion, the “perfect DIY assembly” should always be approached with a certain level of precision and a methodical process, especially for more complex systems like IKEA Metod.

- Before starting installation, make sure to check all components for completeness.
- Follow the instructions exactly; it can help to clearly visualize each step in advance.
- Arrange screws and dowels by type and typical use for easy access.

It is also important that the floor or base surface is perfectly level, as this ensures correct installation and prevents any misalignment.

That’s true, the rubber mallet is an underrated tool, especially for Metod rails and solid wood fronts, to avoid damaging the construction.

Thanks in advance for the helpful information!

A question for GIRoyce: You mentioned that fronts should be installed only after assembly to avoid scratches. Did you mean that the cabinets should be fully assembled alone and positioned before attaching the front panels? I’m asking because otherwise, when moving the cabinets inside the home, people usually handle them with open fronts...

Are there any other tips to avoid installation errors with the drawer slides? They often seem to be perceived as tricky. Also, I would like to hear if anyone has experience using spacer strips or insulation materials to reduce rattling and vibrations.

The issue of drawer slides is indeed a crucial aspect of the Metod system. Based on my own experience, I recommend aligning the slides very carefully, as even small deviations can negatively affect both smooth movement and load capacity.

- Check the slides for any damage before installation
- Use a spirit level or carpenter’s square to ensure parallel alignment
- Do not tighten screws too firmly to avoid warping the material

In general, spacers are not necessary because the system is designed so that the recesses and slides fit together precisely. Even better: perform a function test after installation to adjust any sticks or misaligned slides in time.
