Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Billy bookcase from Ikea and noticed that one of the doors is crooked. The door is not flush with the frame and doesn’t close properly, which also causes some sticking noises when closing. I have already checked the hinges; they are firmly screwed in, but it seems the door is not perfectly aligned at the hinge.

My question to you is: What can be done specifically to realign a crooked door on a Billy bookcase? What adjustment options are available on the hinges exactly? And is it advisable to slightly loosen the screws to reposition the door, or could that cause more damage?

The bookcase is placed on a level floor, but the problem persists. Maybe someone has had similar experiences and can share tips on how to correct this type of misalignment easily and effectively. Thanks in advance!

Interesting question, waldemar58!

I often wonder if the so-called "alignment issues" are actually an intentional part of the design – almost like a statement against sterile, perfect furniture. ;-) But seriously: most of the time, a crooked door is due to poor construction or a bit of carelessness during assembly.

I would take another close look there. Are all the screws fully tightened? A screw that is too loose or too tight can make a big difference. Otherwise, a material defect might be the cause if the wood itself is warped.

A little tip from me: if the door is hung on only one hinge, you can slightly loosen the upper hinge and then realign the door. But be careful—you need to watch this spot closely, otherwise it can quickly look "makeshift."

Hello waldemar58,

First of all, thank you for the detailed description of your issue. It is true that with Billy shelves, the doors sometimes don’t close perfectly straight, but in most cases, this is due to the adjustable hinges.

To explain: Billy doors are usually fitted with what are called concealed hinges, which can be adjusted horizontally, vertically, and sometimes in depth. This means you can fine-tune the position of the door relative to the cabinet using the adjustment screws on the hinge.

If the door is hanging crooked, I would suggest the following steps:
1. Check if the cabinet is level (even if you say the floor is flat, sometimes the shelf itself is slightly out of level).
2. Make sure all hinge screws are tightened.
3. Locate the adjustment screws on the hinges. Usually, there is one for horizontal and one for vertical adjustment. The horizontal screw moves the door sideways, and the vertical screw moves it up or down.

It’s important to only turn one screw a small amount at a time and then check how the door moves. It takes some practice, but with patience, you can get the door properly aligned. If the door still does not close well, check whether the door panels are unevenly loaded or if there is any mechanical damage to the hinge.

I hope this helps!

Hello waldemar58,

here is a short guide you can follow step by step to perfectly align your Billy door.

1. Preparation: Make sure the shelving unit is standing on a completely level surface. Even small unevenness can cause misalignment.

2. Check the hinges: As Grace already mentioned, the cup hinges have adjustment options. Usually, you will find at least two small screws on the front of the hinge:
- One for horizontal adjustment (side to side)
- One for vertical adjustment (up/down)
Sometimes there is a third screw to adjust the door closer to or further away from the cabinet frame.

3. Start adjusting:
- Remove the door carefully or leave it attached, depending on the model.
- Turn each screw only a small amount (a quarter turn), then reposition the door to check if it fits better.
- Repeat this step until the door is parallel to the frame and closes flush.

4. Check the screws: Make sure the screws fixing the hinges to the cabinet frame are not loose, as this can cause the door to twist.

5. If the door still remains misaligned, inspect the door itself for warping or if it is not sitting flush.

Summary: Small, gradual adjustments to the hinges are key. Proceed systematically and patiently—this will pay off.

Loosen the hinges, carefully realign the door, and then tighten the screws again. This is usually all that is needed.

As additional information: Billy shelves use standardized concealed hinges. These typically offer three adjustment options:

- Horizontal (left/right): adjustment screw located on the side of the hinge.
- Vertical (up/down): screw on the mounting plate.
- Depth (in/out): screw that attaches the hinge to the cabinet body.

Adjustments are made gradually. It is important to check all screws on the hinge and the mounting plate and, if necessary, loosen them before adjusting the door position to avoid damage.

Note: If the door is warped or damaged, adjustment alone will have limited effect.
