ᐅ How do I fix crooked or misaligned doors on a Billy shelving unit?

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Ikea Billy bookshelf and hope to get some advice here. Specifically, the doors have gradually become misaligned and wobble, so they no longer close properly. I suspect that over time the doors have warped or the hinges have become loose. The right door hangs slightly lower and therefore does not align flush with the left one.

I have already been adjusting the screws on the hinges, but so far this has not provided a lasting improvement. Do you know the best way to restore these Billy doors so they close straight and stable again? Are there any special tips or tools that make repairs easier?

I would really appreciate any practical advice on repairs or tips for maintaining the hinges!

An addition to the previous tips:

If you adjust the hinges multiple times and still notice the door tilting, the issue might be with the cabinet side itself. This can happen, for example, due to moisture or an uneven surface, which affects the door alignment.

I recommend first checking the sides with a level. If the cabinet is tilted, you might be able to correct it by placing wedges underneath or attaching small wooden pieces with mounting adhesive on the back.

Additionally, padding the hinges with a small felt pad after adjustment can help them sit more firmly and reduce the need for frequent readjustment.

Do you get the impression that the door is actually warped?

Good question. So far, I mainly feel that the right door hangs lower, which is probably due to the hinge attachment. I can’t see any visible deformation of the door with the naked eye at the moment, but I haven’t measured it precisely.

I will definitely check that more carefully. Thanks for the tip!

For now, I will carefully examine the screws and try to tighten them properly. If that doesn’t help, I’ll experiment with shims in case the sides are uneven.

If anyone has further tips for measuring and checking the door alignment, I would appreciate it.

Hello Kinje,

I would like to elaborate on my recommendation, as I understand that Billy doors can be challenging not only because of the hinges. Based on my experience, the following detailed workflow is advisable:

1. Check the flatness of the outer sides of the shelving unit with a spirit level, as previously mentioned. An uneven or warped shelf structure causes problems with the doors.

2. Inspect the hinge screws for tightness, not only on the door but also in the shelving unit. Sometimes the fixing nails or wall anchors loosen inside the unit, causing the hinges to become loose.

3. Use an Allen wrench to adjust the individual hinge mechanisms to align the door precisely both horizontally and vertically. The 3D adjustment feature is very helpful here.

4. If you notice that a drill hole in the door has already widened significantly, it is useful to reinforce it with wood filler or dowels of the same size.

5. When tightening the screws, please use a torque wrench or be very careful not to overtighten and cause damage.

6. If possible, remove the door completely once and reinstall it after realigning.

One more question: How old is your Billy, and what kind of environment is it in (quite humid, dry)? The indoor climate can especially affect wood and thus the fit of the doors.

Best regards and good luck!

That's the key point! Otherwise, the door will remain loose permanently.

I can understand how frustrating a leaning door on a Billy unit can be, especially after spending a lot of time polishing or organizing, only to find that the door doesn’t close properly. It’s important not to lose patience and to address the issue step by step.

Anyone who has done a similar repair knows that a delicate touch is necessary. It’s better to make small adjustments gradually rather than applying too much pressure by pushing or pulling. This helps prevent damage to the wood—especially since Billy units are usually made of particleboard.

It can also be helpful to check the surroundings: is the shelf standing on a level floor? An uneven floor can cause the entire unit to be out of alignment.

Thank you all very much!

Yesterday, I carefully checked the hinges again and tightened the screws [quote=Golekau, post: v1v9i4, member:XXX], which already made a noticeable difference. It wobbles much less now.

I also checked the shelving side with a spirit level (thanks to Gino38 and pauPierce for the tip). There was indeed a slight tilt, the floor is not completely level, which I hadn’t considered.

Today, I’ll try inserting small wedges precisely behind the side panel to better align the shelf. If that works, I’ll report back with the results.

I’m really optimistic that I’ve finally gotten to the bottom of the problem. 🙂
