Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought the BILLY shelving unit from IKEA and installed the doors. However, I noticed that these doors are quite difficult to open quietly. Often, there are loud popping sounds or unpleasant squeaking, which can be quite annoying in daily use.

Does anyone have experience or tips on how to make BILLY doors open more quietly? I would like to know if there are specific techniques, lubricants, or perhaps replacement parts that could help make the doors quieter and easier to open.

I look forward to your helpful advice and possibly some recommendations on maintaining the hinges or dampers. Thank you in advance!

Can you explain to me the best way to properly align the door and which screws I need to loosen for that?

Gladly! On the BILLY hinges, there are usually three adjustment screws on each hinge:

- One screw is turned to shift the door horizontally left or right.
- A second one adjusts the depth, meaning whether the door sits flush with the cabinet frame or sticks out slightly.
- The third screw is for vertical adjustment, raising or lowering the door.

To start, you can slightly loosen the screws one at a time with a Phillips screwdriver (do not turn them out completely), then gently press the door to align it as needed, and finally tighten the screws again.

If the doors stick, try adjusting a few millimeters (inches) more until they open smoothly.

I recommend adjusting one screw at a time so you can clearly see how each setting affects the door.

Feel free to ask if you need more detailed help!

Hey danalo!

That sounds like a great project! 🙂 For my BILLY doors, I simply attached small felt pads at the contact points. This cushions the impact really well and makes the doors much more pleasant to use.

I also took inspiration from alvalo and treated the hinges with silicone spray. Now the doors slide like they're on clouds – no more noise!

Give it a try, it doesn’t cost much and makes a huge difference. Wishing you lots of success!

Simply adjust the door hinges and apply silicone spray – this is usually enough for quiet opening.
If the doors are scraping, they are probably not aligned properly in the center. Loosen the screws slightly, reposition the door, and tighten the screws again. This will save you a lot of trouble.

Hello everyone,

I would like to add that BILLY doors are often relatively lightweight doors, yet they involve complex mechanical interactions.

Silent opening is achieved through a combination of precisely adjusted hinges, appropriate lubrication, and a clean transition between the door and the cabinet—meaning accurately set stops.

I recommend cleaning the hinges with a fine brush or cotton swab to remove dust and old residues before applying silicone spray. This is the only way to ensure that the lubricant can work effectively over the long term.

Additionally, small felt or rubber pads can be glued to the inside edges of the door at contact points to further reduce rattling and creaking.

If you like, I can provide a detailed step-by-step guide, which even includes removing the door and professionally lubricating the hinges—this is a bit more effort but highly effective.

Hi danalo and everyone else reading along ;-)

I noticed that a bit of felt here and some lubricant there make the BILLY doors feel almost like new and open as quietly as a cat’s step.

What I also like to do: stick a small furniture felt pad onto the door knob. This makes handling gentler and prevents unnecessary noise.

With a little patience, you can quickly turn loud creaking into a quiet symphony. 🙂
