Hello everyone, I have recently noticed that the doors of my BILLY shelf often creak when I open or close them. I'm wondering: why do BILLY doors creak so frequently for many users? Is this a known issue related to the hardware quality, or is it more due to the assembly, humidity, or perhaps the material itself? I would like to understand what exactly to watch out for in order to prevent or fix the creaking. Perhaps someone here has long-term experience with BILLY and knows the typical causes.

I can fully understand how annoying creaking doors are – I had the same issue with my BILLY shelf.

In my experience, it’s often due to a combination of hinge quality and lack of lubrication. Especially with older models, dust and small particles get trapped in the hinges, which often makes the movement quite rough.

Sometimes a bit of oil or silicone spray helps, but that is really just a short-term solution when the material itself is gradually wearing out.

Simply spray the hinges with some WD-40, and the squeaking will usually go away. If not, replace the hinges.

Squeaking usually occurs due to friction between metal parts or between metal and wood. Therefore, lubrication or replacing the hinges often solves the problem easily.

Haha, I can just imagine a BILLY shelf secretly creaking when the door opens, as if it’s trying to say, "Hey, watch out, I’m under tension!" 😄

But seriously: most of the time, it’s really the combination of metal fittings and lack of lubrication. And since BILLY is more of an affordable shelf, the hardware doesn’t exactly get a luxury vacation. 😉 A little oil, and the doors will slide smoothly again.

I had the same problem at first and was quite frustrated because the creaking was so loud that you hardly dared to use the door.

Most of the time, it really is the interaction between metal bearings and lack of lubrication.

This matches my experience exactly. I thoroughly cleaned the hinges, applied some silicone spray, and that helped a lot. It’s also important to tighten the screws because sometimes they loosen.
