Hello everyone, I have an issue with my IKEA Billy bookshelf, specifically with the doors. Whenever I open them, the entire unit starts to wobble slightly, which is quite annoying, especially with a fully loaded version, and also poses a safety risk. The bookshelf is standing on a standard laminate floor without any unevenness. I have already made minor adjustments to the doors, but the problem persists. Does anyone have tips or experience on how to prevent the wobbling when opening the doors? What additional measures, such as proper wall mounting, extra stabilization, or adjustments, could help? I appreciate all suggestions, including technical details or proven solutions.

The issue with wobbling often occurs because the shelf is not securely anchored to the wall or the floor is uneven, causing the shelf to tilt when the doors are opened. First, you should check whether the supplied wall brackets are correctly and firmly installed. If the shelf is not adequately secured, the tilting movement caused by opening the doors transfers to the entire piece of furniture. Additionally, small wedges or felt pads can be placed under the shelf feet to compensate for any unevenness. It is also useful to adjust the doors so that they do not exert excessive force on the shelf. Finally, a testing procedure is recommended: start by observing the initial state, then open the doors and watch to see if one side becomes relieved or more stressed. If necessary, alternative fastenings with significantly higher load capacity may be advisable.

As an addition: With my BILLY shelves, I have found that adding an extra wall attachment in the middle of the back panel often significantly improves stability. By default, the brackets are only at the top, which is usually not enough. It also helps to better align the doors. Check the hinges to ensure they are correctly adjusted and firmly screwed in. Wobbling can also occur if the doors are hanging too tightly, causing the cabinet to move.

Attach the wall, tighten the screws, and if necessary, level the floor using wooden wedges or rubber shims. Adjust the doors precisely.

I assume your BILLY bookcase is fitted with doors and that the wobbling occurs together with uneven load distribution on the floor. Generally, the stability of a piece of furniture depends not only on the wall attachment but also on the connection of the individual components, particularly the support on the floor. Step 1: Check if the bookcase sits completely flat on the floor. You can tell by trying to slightly rock it. The floor needs to be absolutely stable; if necessary, you should shim precisely. Step 2: Wall attachment. Ideally, it should be fixed at least in two points, preferably at the top and in the middle, since the doors transfer pressure forces and moments when opening and closing. If it is only fixed at the top, it is not sufficient for greater loads. If your bookcase is firmly attached to the wall but the floor support is not properly aligned yet, this will have a negative effect. Step 3: Adjust the doors. The hinges on BILLY bookcases can be adjusted in the correct directions: height adjustment, depth, and lateral offset. The doors should be set so that they neither press nor pull. A door panel that is too tightly tensioned transfers forces to the cabinet and causes instability. Step 4: Optionally, you can add additional bracing at the back, for example a wooden board or suitable metal brackets, to increase lateral stability. Step 5: Check if the shelves are properly slotted in and not loose, as they make the furniture more torsion-resistant. One more thing I’m curious about: Did you assemble the bookcase completely at once, or did you perhaps install the doors afterward? That can affect the load distribution.

Thank you for the detailed answers so far! To answer your question, BENBI: Yes, I assembled the entire shelf, and the doors were attached from the beginning. All the shelves are in place, and I only installed the wall mounting bracket at the top of the cabinet, as described in the instructions. I’m wondering if it would be sensible to add extra wall fixings, for example, in the middle of the shelf, on my own. There is still some room for adjusting the doors; I have only made minimal adjustments to the hinges so far. The floor is truly level, so I suspect the issue lies more in the door alignment or insufficient stabilization.
