Hello everyone, I have been experiencing an issue for some time with my IKEA Billy bookcases where the doors seem to be too heavy for the hinges. Specifically, the doors are difficult to open and close, and as a result, they sometimes hang slightly crooked and appear to be under strain. I am curious whether this is simply a design flaw of the hinges, or if there are factors related to door size, material thickness, or installation that I should consider as a user to avoid or fix the problem. Are there known reasons why some Billy doors might be too heavy for the hinges, and what can I do to make the doors operate more smoothly and easily again?

Great to see so many thoughtful contributions here!

I had similar issues with my BILLY. In my case, it was actually a slightly warped door caused by humidity during the summer. Since I slightly adjusted the doors, properly lubricated the hinges, and regularly check them, everything works perfectly again.

Sometimes, small things make a big difference. 🙂

So: keep at it and good luck!

A small tip to finish: If the doors are really heavy and the hinges are close to their load limit, adding a second hinge per door often works wonders.

This distributes the weight better and prevents over-twisting or stiff movement.

Alternatively, there are reinforced furniture hinges available at hardware stores, which are usually easy to install.

This is a smart solution if you want to keep the doors but the hinges are overloaded.

BILLY is not a high-end piece of furniture, but for the price, it's acceptable. If the doors are too heavy, you either need to replace the hinges or use lighter doors.

Thanks to everyone who contributed!

Today, I removed all the hinges, cleaned them, and lightly oiled them. After that, the doors hung smoothly and straight. Then I experimented with a small piece of leather as a buffer to better distribute the weight.

The result: the doors operate much more easily and feel more stable. I think it was actually a combination of the heavy MDF door, slightly uneven installation, and lack of maintenance.

If this doesn’t hold up over time, I’m considering adding a second hinge point.

Your input was very helpful, thanks again!
