Hello everyone, I have noticed annoying squeaking at the hinges of the doors on my Billy bookshelf. Despite careful use, the noise is quite bothersome. My specific question is: What reliably helps against squeaky hinges on Billy doors without having to completely remove or replace the hinges? Are there proven solutions to quickly and permanently fix this problem? I would also appreciate recommendations for suitable lubricants or methods.

A drop of WD-40 on the hinges, then open and close a few times; this usually solves the problem.

To fix squeaking hinges on Billy doors, I recommend first thoroughly cleaning the hinge joints. Dust and dirt can be the cause. Afterwards, applying a suitable lubricant is essential. Ideally, use a dry PTFE or silicone spray, as these do not attract dirt and provide long-lasting protection. Alternatively, sewing machine oil can be used if applied sparingly.

I have had good experiences with graphite powder; it keeps the hinge clean and prevents squeaking without leaving an oily residue.

I would say the classic home remedy works well here too: a little olive oil is enough, but it's best to use it very sparingly. Otherwise, it quickly becomes sticky and attracts dirt. Then you'll soon have a new problem. ;-)

Regarding hinges and their maintenance: It is important that the lubricant is long-lasting and does not harden quickly. WD-40 is good for cleaning, but rather unsuitable as a permanent lubricant. For cabinet doors, I therefore recommend silicone spray or PTFE spray, as these products provide lasting lubrication without attracting dust.
