Hello everyone, I have been having an issue for some time now with the doors of my IKEA Billy bookshelf squeaking when I open or close them. These are the standard wooden doors with fixed hinges. The squeaking is quite loud and becomes annoying over time. I would like to fix the doors myself without having to replace entire parts or call a professional.

Can someone please explain the best steps to effectively eliminate the squeaking? What products or tools do I need, and what should I pay attention to so that the doors operate smoothly again?

I have considered that the problem might be with the hinges or possibly the installation, but since I did not assemble the Billy bookshelf myself, I am uncertain. Thanks in advance for your help!

Squeaking in Billy doors is usually caused by dry or dirty hinges. Often, thoroughly cleaning the hinges and then lubricating them well is enough. Here is my tip:

1. First, carefully remove the doors to get better access to the hinges.
2. Use a dry cloth to remove dust and dirt from the hinges.
3. Then apply an appropriate lubricant, ideally a silicone or Teflon spray—avoid WD-40, as it can become sticky over time.
4. Spray or lightly coat the hinges with the lubricant.
5. Rehang the doors and open and close them several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

This should eliminate the squeaking. If not, replacing the hinges might be necessary.

Exactly, with Billy bookcases it’s usually the hinge causing the problem. 😁 I once repaired my doors using very simple tools: a little penetrating oil (not grease!) and a clean cloth are usually enough. It’s important that you properly remove the doors from their hinges – this can be a bit tricky at first, but with patience you’ll manage.

Tip: Billy bookcases often have two to three hinges per door; all of them should be well lubricated. Otherwise, the squeaking just moves somewhere else. Good luck!

I did it similarly to Elodie, but I also checked the small screws on the hinges. Sometimes they loosen and cause squeaking.

I completely agree! I once used WD-40, and it actually made the problem worse.

Remove the doors, clean the hinges, use silicone spray or graphite powder, then rehang and test.

Great thread! 🙂 Thanks for starting it. I had the same problem and just used a light lubricant oil – it worked immediately! Thumbs up for DIY repairs, instead of buying new parts right away! 🙂
