Hello everyone,

I have had IKEA Billy shelves at home for some time and am quite satisfied with their basic functionality. However, I am increasingly annoyed by the opening and closing of the attached doors. They often feel stiff, rattle when slammed shut, or hang slightly crookedly, which makes handling uncomfortable.

I would like to know: How can the opening and closing of BILLY doors be improved? Are there technically simple modifications or accessories that make the door movement smooth, quiet, and precise? I would appreciate concrete tips on adjusting the hinges, adding dampers, or other practical solutions.

It is important to me that these improvements are long-lasting, so the doors not only work a bit better in the short term but also remain stable and pleasant to use over time.

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

I can really relate to the annoying rattling and stiffness! For me, it was always a bit of a stress factor, especially when children are using the doors.

Maybe the problem simply lies in the lack of precision in the furniture.

I agree with that; the Billy shelves are basically basic furniture. Back then, I tried to align the shelf precisely and used wooden wedges to compensate for small unevenness. After that, closing the doors was much better.

But it also takes patience, and you shouldn’t expect too much perfection. 😉 Still, dampers or suitable silicone buffers help preserve your nerves, as they also prove effective even with slight distortions.

Hello Suribar and readers,

Here is a brief guide on how to improve the BILLY doors in several steps:

1. Check the frame: Make sure the BILLY bookshelf itself is perfectly level, preferably using a spirit level. An imprecise installation will cause the doors to function poorly.

2. Adjust the hinges: IKEA hinges usually offer three adjustment options, with screws often placed in easily accessible positions.

- Horizontal adjustment: To align the door sideways.
- Vertical adjustment: To raise or lower the door.
- Depth adjustment: To change the gap between the door and the cabinet.

When fine-tuning, ensure the door does not stick.

3. Add damping:
- Original soft-close adapters can be retrofitted and are highly recommended because they ensure smooth closing.
- Alternatively, self-adhesive rubber buffers can be attached to the inside of the frame.

4. Maintenance:
- Avoid aggressive lubricants.
- Use silicone oil if needed.

A final question for the thread starter: Have you tried loosening the hinges completely, removing the door, and realigning it? This often leads to significant improvements.

Hope this helps everyone, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Why are these dampers so stereotypically recommended?

Because they’re really practical and deliver quick results! 🙂 Of course, the shelf needs to be relatively level; otherwise, it doesn’t make much sense. But once you’ve got the basic frame straightened out, the dampers are truly great, honestly!

Exactly! I installed them myself and am very happy with the result. You hardly hear anything when the door closes. Plus, it also looks more refined when you retrofit them.

Hey everyone! 🙂

I agree with the suggestions to retrofit dampers – it’s really relaxing when the door no longer slams! And for those who aren’t too keen on DIY: there are small magnetic catches you can attach to the shelf and the door, so the door closes gently and always stays securely in place.

You can also apply some felt on the inside of the door during installation – this prevents rattling without needing much additional work.

Sometimes small tricks are enough to turn a simple BILLY shelf into a comfortable piece of furniture. Good luck with that! 😉

Good morning everyone,

Thank you very much for the many responses and tips yesterday! Last night, I took the time to inspect the hinges more closely and tightened the screws a bit – that really helped, the doors now hang straighter.

However, they are still not perfect. I will now look for soft-close adapters and get self-adhesive dampers.

How exactly do these magnetic catches work with BILLY? Do the doors stay closed continuously, or do they come loose easily when opening?

Thanks for further advice!

How exactly do those magnetic catches work on BILLY?

Magnetic catches consist of a metal plate attached to the door and a magnet fixed to the shelving frame. When the door closes, they attract each other to hold the door in place. They prevent the door from shifting easily or opening unintentionally but do not provide any cushioning against slamming—this has to be addressed separately.

One advantage is that opening the door requires a bit of force, so the doors stay securely closed while remaining easy to open, especially if no other locking mechanisms are installed.

It’s also important to note that magnetic catches have a limited holding strength. For larger or heavier doors, you should verify whether they provide adequate retention.

If you want to use soft-close adapters, these systems generally don’t interfere with each other—you can install both together.

Best regards!
