Hello everyone,
I have had IKEA Billy shelves at home for some time and am quite satisfied with their basic functionality. However, I am increasingly annoyed by the opening and closing of the attached doors. They often feel stiff, rattle when slammed shut, or hang slightly crookedly, which makes handling uncomfortable.
I would like to know: How can the opening and closing of BILLY doors be improved? Are there technically simple modifications or accessories that make the door movement smooth, quiet, and precise? I would appreciate concrete tips on adjusting the hinges, adding dampers, or other practical solutions.
It is important to me that these improvements are long-lasting, so the doors not only work a bit better in the short term but also remain stable and pleasant to use over time.
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

This is great, how deeply you’re getting into the subject! 🙂
I recently upgraded BILLY doors with soft-close mechanisms myself and can highly recommend it. It’s super easy to install, and now I wouldn’t want to go without it.
TUELBA perfectly explained how to adjust the hinges – that really is the first step. But the final feeling comes from the soft-close mechanism itself. When installed correctly, the door feels almost like it belongs to an expensive piece of furniture.
One more tip: don’t use cheap knock-offs, but rather original accessories or high-quality adapters, otherwise the screws may loosen or the mechanism won’t be durable.

After reading your descriptions and tips here, I will check how my BILLY doors are adjusted this evening. Thanks for the encouragement!
Sometimes you underestimate how much such small adjustments affect how the furniture ultimately functions.
I’ll get back to you if I run into any problems. Have a great day! 🙂
