Hello everyone, I have noticed some minor scratches on the doors of my Billy shelf. The doors are painted and made of particleboard with a thin veneer. I am interested in how to best and most inconspicuously repair such small scratches. I am especially concerned about the BILLY doors because I have read that the material can be somewhat sensitive. Can anyone recommend a reliable method to fix scratches without leaving the surface visibly damaged or uneven? What materials, tools, or tricks would you suggest? Thanks!

For small scratches, I usually use a furniture touch-up marker in a matching color. Simply apply, let it dry briefly, and gently polish with a soft cloth.

Oh, that sounds great, poju67! 🙂 I once had a similar situation and achieved excellent results using a special wood repair kit. With it, you can even fill small imperfections and then color-match them – it’s really fantastic! Give it a try; it’s fun and works really well!!!

Hello poju67, I would like to explain how to methodically repair small scratches on the BILLY doors. It is important to note that the surface is usually a melamine-coated foil, so it is sensitive to excessive mechanical treatment or aggressive abrasives.

Step 1: Clean the surface to remove any dust or grease.
Step 2: For minor scratches, furniture repair markers or specially matched wax sticks work best.
Step 3: If the scratches are deeper, you can carefully lightly sand the area with fine wet sandpaper (about grit 400-600), but only minimally and gently.

Before proceeding, I would ask: How deep and how long exactly are the scratches? And are the doors more matte or glossy? The treatment varies slightly.

One final tip: After the repair, I always recommend polishing the area with a microfiber cloth to adjust the sheen and reduce visible transitions.

Thank you for asking! The scratches are all relatively short (about 3–5 cm (1–2 inches)) and quite superficial, more like minor surface marks rather than deep grooves. The doors have a matte finish with the typical white film covering, which feels slightly rougher than a high-gloss surface. They are not glossy or painted but coated.

For matte BILLY doors, it helps to gently treat scratches first with a rubber eraser, then use a suitable furniture touch-up marker, and finally allow it to dry briefly.
