Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA, but I noticed that the doors I installed are slightly warped. This mainly shows because they don’t close properly and look uneven in some areas.

My question is: What is the best way to straighten these warped doors?

I have considered whether treating them with heat might help or if simply adjusting the hinges would be enough, but I’m concerned that I might cause more damage. Perhaps someone has knowledge of material properties or experience with similar cases.

I would appreciate any tips, especially on how to avoid damaging the surface and what should definitely be avoided.

That sounds really frustrating when the doors don’t fit properly. I had a similar issue and can fully understand how annoying that can be.

What I did was completely loosen the hinges first, then carefully realign the doors. It helped to gently push the doors—without applying too much force to avoid any cracking.

Maybe this can help you for now. If the doors are made of MDF or chipboard, applying some heat might help, but be careful not to damage the surface. Have you tried taking the doors off the frame to work on them more easily?

That is a good initial approach, but I wonder if simply realigning can permanently straighten warped doors.

BILLY doors are usually made of particleboard with a foil coating – this material is susceptible to moisture and temperature-related deformation. Achieving a lasting straightening through adjustment alone will be very difficult.

Heat is problematic because it damages the plastic surface, and applying heat to particleboard makes little sense since it does not change shape through heat like solid wood does.

Instead, it may be better to store the doors under light pressure to gradually straighten them over several days, or consider replacing them if necessary.

Remove, lay completely flat on a level surface, and weigh down with weights. Leave for 1-2 days. Then reinstall.

Also check if the doors are sagging due to hinges that are too loose. Usually, it is the hinges causing the problem, not the door leaf itself.

If the doors are untreated, lightly sanding the edges can help them fit better. However, this does not work for significant warping.
