Hello everyone, I have been having an issue for some time now with the doors of my IKEA Billy bookshelf squeaking when I open or close them. These are the standard wooden doors with fixed hinges. The squeaking is quite loud and becomes annoying over time. I would like to fix the doors myself without having to replace entire parts or call a professional.
Can someone please explain the best steps to effectively eliminate the squeaking? What products or tools do I need, and what should I pay attention to so that the doors operate smoothly again?
I have considered that the problem might be with the hinges or possibly the installation, but since I did not assemble the Billy bookshelf myself, I am uncertain. Thanks in advance for your help!

To effectively eliminate squeaking, it is advisable to inspect the entire hinge mechanism. In addition to cleaning and lubrication, check that the fastening screws are securely tightened. If the noise persists and is not resolved by lubrication, a slight adjustment of the hinge pins may help to avoid friction points. Recommended tools include a Phillips screwdriver, a cleaning cloth, and a high-quality silicone spray or graphite powder. WD-40 can provide short-term relief due to its solvent properties, but its residues can cause long-term gumming.
Thanks for the tips so far! Could someone briefly explain the best way to take the doors off? I’m worried about damaging something. Is there a trick or a safe method to do this? Also, I have two different types of hinges on my Billy, a simple one and a concealed one. Should I handle both in the same way?
To remove the doors: For Billy shelves with concealed hinges, there is a clip mechanism. First, close the door, then lift or push back the small plastic tab or metal clip on the hinge, depending on the model. This releases the upper hinge from the shelf. Then, slightly lift the door and take it off the lower hinges.
For simple overlay hinges, just loosen the screws on the shelf and carefully lift the door off.
The trick is not to use force, proceed carefully, and if uncertain, watch photos or online videos. This helps prevent damage.

Haha, initially removing the door also made my heart race a bit. 🙂 Just check if the hinge has a small spring or clip that you can press or tilt. Usually, that works quite well.
Exactly! If you’re gentle, your Billy will thank you with quietly closing doors. 😉
