ᐅ What should I do if a door on my Billy bookshelf is crooked?

Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Billy bookcase from Ikea and noticed that one of the doors is crooked. The door is not flush with the frame and doesn’t close properly, which also causes some sticking noises when closing. I have already checked the hinges; they are firmly screwed in, but it seems the door is not perfectly aligned at the hinge.

My question to you is: What can be done specifically to realign a crooked door on a Billy bookcase? What adjustment options are available on the hinges exactly? And is it advisable to slightly loosen the screws to reposition the door, or could that cause more damage?

The bookcase is placed on a level floor, but the problem persists. Maybe someone has had similar experiences and can share tips on how to correct this type of misalignment easily and effectively. Thanks in advance!

Hey waldemar58,

sanding doors on Billy shelves is almost legendary, but with a bit of attention to detail, you can fix it! 🙂 My tip: guitar tuners know the feeling when everything has to be adjusted by just a millimeter – it’s the same with the hinges.

Make yourself comfortable, get a small screwdriver for the fine adjustment screws, turn it a quarter turn, and see what happens. Sometimes it also helps to take the door off briefly, shake it gently, and then take another look with fresh eyes.

Good luck! 🙂

a bit of sloppiness during assembly

Haha, there’s some truth to that, but honestly, sometimes you just don’t have the perfect Monday when assembling – it happens to the best of us! 😉

Otherwise, I agree with the others: patience and careful adjustments are the key. Eventually, you’ll have the door aligned, and you can proudly admire your Billy again 😉

This is amazing, how much you can do with just a few screws! 🙂 I had the same problem last year and was really frustrated at first. Then I looked for tips and found this explanation about the three adjustment options. It helped me a lot—my door now hangs perfectly and closes like new!

So: keep at it, you can do it! It’s actually fun once you get the hang of it! 😉

To directly address this question: Yes, it is generally advisable to carefully loosen the screws if it helps to adjust the door. However, you should never fully remove all the screws at once.

Instead, you can slightly loosen the screws on one hinge—this allows you to reposition the door. Afterward, you can tighten the screws again to secure the new position. Just be careful not to overtighten the screws to avoid damaging the material.

This cautious approach does no harm and is a normal part of fine-tuning furniture with adjustable hinges.
