TU-JA56Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into safety measures recommended when using Ikea Besta units, especially when several modules are placed in the living area.
I am particularly interested in aspects such as wall mounting to prevent tipping hazards, as well as protection against scratches and how to properly care for the surface to keep the furniture looking good for as long as possible. I am also unsure whether certain baskets or inserts are advisable to improve stability and usability.
From your perspective, which safety measures are necessary or useful to ensure both security and durability for Ikea Besta shelving units? Are there common mistakes or issues that should be avoided?
Thank you for your tips!

Wall mounting is an absolute must for Ikea Besta units. Many underestimate this and risk the module tipping over, especially if there are children in the house. So always use the included brackets and wall plugs!
Also, I would recommend using a protective film on the surface if you work with it a lot – scratches show up quickly, especially on white or light-colored surfaces.
One more tip: if you use baskets or boxes, choose metal frames or sturdy materials to prevent the furniture from wobbling or putting too much weight on one spot.
Don’t worry – with the right tricks, you’ll stay relaxed and your Besta furniture will look great! 🎉

These modules are often freestanding but, as tall furniture pieces, they are prone to tipping—especially when loaded unevenly or if children climb on them.
Additionally, it is advisable to use felt pads or gliders under the adjustable feet to prevent floor damage and minimize slipping.
For surface care, neutral, pH-balanced cleaning agents that do not damage the lacquer or melamine finish are recommended. Abrasive cleaners or rough sponges should be avoided, as they can quickly cause visible scratches.
To improve stability, additional internal braces can be installed, or the modules can be arranged so that they support each other. In general, even weight distribution should be ensured to prevent deformation.
Common mistakes include not anchoring the units to the wall and overloading individual compartments with excessively heavy contents.

I would also add that placing small rubber bumpers on the corners can be helpful, especially in households with children or elderly people, to avoid injuries from bumps.
Furthermore, I was initially unsure about the load capacity of the shelves, so we always made sure to store heavy items on the lower shelves, which actually reduced the stress on each individual shelf.
And yes, surface maintenance should not be underestimated either; I was able to easily remove small scratches with special furniture polish from the hardware store, which also provides extra protection.

Always use the included brackets and anchors!Yes, finally someone says it! Sometimes you might think the furniture is stable on its own, but I was wrong.
And a little extra tip from me: If you choose Besta with doors, make sure the hinges are properly adjusted, otherwise the doors will slam shut and damage the surface. A bit of attention to detail significantly extends the lifespan 😊
Oh, and felt pads under the legs are a small DIY miracle—they protect against scratches on parquet or laminate flooring and prevent the furniture from sliding around.
Hope this helps! Keep at it, safety and style don’t have to be a trade-off 😉
