I am currently planning an IKEA kitchen. I have planned a tall cabinet for a microwave (but I will use my own microwave) and an oven (at 220 cm (87 inches) tall). Now I am wondering, why shouldn't I choose a tall cabinet that is 240 cm (94 inches) high? Is a tall cabinet of that height practical?

IKEA-Experte25 May 2015 15:43240 cm (94 inches) high becomes 248 cm (98 inches) including the base. The ceiling height must therefore be more than 250 cm (98 inches). This is especially practical with upper cabinets that are 100 cm (39 inches) high. The 240 cm (94 inches) height is only available as a combination of 200 cm (79 inches) plus 40 cm (16 inches). A 40 cm (16 inches) high compartment must then be sufficient for the intended purpose. Whether an additional 20 cm (8 inches) of storage space is important can only be answered by you.
Thank you for your reply. I’ll stick with the 220 cm (87 inches) height then, which will be 228 cm (90 inches) including the base.
One more question: I’ve planned to use the Karlby walnut countertop. For the base, I was thinking of the Edserum brown wood-effect. I thought it would provide a nice contrast... or does the Edserum differ too much from the Karlby walnut? Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to compare both in the IKEA store directly.
PS: Is there anything I could improve in my design?
I want to avoid having wall cabinets.

Juliette W25 May 2015 19:32Just a quick question: Are you planning to install a dishwasher that isn’t from Ikea in the niche next to the sink? Have you considered the challenges involved? There is a long thread about this topic here in the forum.
PS: I would choose the baseboard in the same color as the cabinet fronts. I initially didn’t want to, but it really looks best that way. Your floor is wood as well, which otherwise would create a mix of different grain patterns.

For the sink, I have chosen the Blanco Elon XL 6 S anthracite granite inset sink in gray...
The extractor hood will be a black, head-free design...

Are you planning to use the Kroktorp fronts? If so, please be aware that these are being discontinued. Unlike a few weeks ago when I placed my order, I am now facing significant difficulties in sourcing everything.
At another IKEA store, I was informed that no new kitchens with this front are allowed to be sold anymore, but this information does not seem to have reached all locations yet.
