Well.
Either the IKEA person didn’t read their employment contract properly or they were planning to change jobs anyway 😉
As I have mentioned elsewhere, it is simply IKEA’s business policy (and this is by no means a secret) to constantly change their product range.
In the end, everything is ALWAYS discontinued at some point.
It’s that simple.
When something is discontinued at IKEA, you can simply keep buying it until the stock runs out—after that, it’s gone for good.
The purpose of changing the product range is to create capacity for new products. It doesn’t make much sense to fill yourself up with “old stuff.”

Zuzwinker15 Jul 2012 12:19Hello 🙂
Are there specific intervals when new products are released?
After 1.5 years of planning my living room and constantly wavering on whether to do this or that, I experienced last week that, for example, the Kivik sofa with Tranas fabric is discontinued (I almost cried), and the Besta floor cabinet with 49cm (19 inches) depth is gone too... It’s not a problem anymore, since Tranas fabric was available in the USA, so I ordered it, and now the Besta cabinets simply don’t stick out by 9cm (3.5 inches). In the meantime, I figured out how to perfectly conceal my messy Billy shelves instead of throwing them away 🙂
But back to the question: Are there intervals for these product updates? Like a summer collection for sofas?
At the moment, a lot seems to be happening in the beds and Pax wardrobe sections... It’s summer, so our local IKEA is renovating like crazy. They wouldn’t do that if there wasn’t anything new coming.
Best regards
Andrea

IKEA-Profi15 Jul 2012 15:19A renovation usually NEVER has anything to do with new product lines, even though new products are naturally showcased as well. Typically, all furniture available for purchase is displayed in the house, including older items. Nowadays, new products are introduced at four times a year, and other products are gradually phased out, but this does not happen in a single day; it is a process that takes several weeks. Family price events, Midsummer, and weekly offers are always good indicators that a product might be discontinued.

Artur_859921 Jul 2012 12:30If the Faktum system is discontinued, that would be a disgrace. My main reason for wanting to buy a kitchen from Ikea was the long-term compatibility over decades. If that is no longer guaranteed, I might as well buy a kitchen from a kitchen studio, which isn’t more expensive anyway.
It’s also a disgrace that the Nexus brown-black finish has been discontinued! I have been planning a kitchen with the Nexus front using Ikea’s poor kitchen planner for a few weeks, and now it no longer exists. I designed/renovated the kitchen based on this front, and only now do I find out it’s no longer available, even though it is still shown on the website and in the kitchen planner. Why are customers not warned in advance?
Another thing I noticed is the €100 (approximately $110) kitchen voucher promotion. Last week, any regular customer could receive the voucher, but now suddenly you have to be an Ikea Family member. What is that about? Somehow, I feel like I’m being fooled.

Nayla_106822 Jul 2012 10:20Please calm down, Artur. At the tone you’re using here, you won’t get a reasonable answer. I also want to remind you that this isn’t an Ikea-run forum. Here, fans share their own experiences with Ikea or employees try to help in their free time and patiently answer questions. Alternatively, you can visit your local store or call the hotline. And by the way, a thank you is quite rare here as well.
I’ll try to answer anyway. What’s the problem with the fact that Faktum is eventually being replaced? Everything evolves, weaknesses are improved, new things are added. Faktum has been around for a long time; it simply needs to keep up with the times. Nexus is indeed being phased out. Strangely, there are still lots of Nexus units in the stores. Try to buy what you can at absolute bargain prices, or get parts from neighboring stores, and later you can order parts from your local store for up to 2 years via a reorder list. Or just wait for the new catalog launch and take a look at the new fronts—I have a feeling there might be something for you. 😉 Regarding your last question: stores can decide on many promotions independently. That’s why you got the voucher in your store “just like that.” Other stores didn’t have this promotion. The current promotion is centrally managed, meaning all stores participate. So now the voucher is only available with the Family Card. What’s wrong with the card? That you get lots of benefits? Your kids receive gifts, you get free coffee, transport protection, and so on… Right, terrible. I wouldn’t do it either. (Irony off)
I hope I have answered your questions. If you have more, just ask them in a different tone.
Best regards

Artur_859924 Jul 2012 18:11 Actually, strangely enough, Nexus still has large stock available in the kitchensActually not, take a look online at some Nexus fronts and see in which kitchens there are still stocks available. For my planned kitchen, I can’t find any suitable sizes in all of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).
What’s the problem with Faktum eventually being replaced? The problem is that you won’t get any replacements anymore! So what’s the issue with keeping Faktum? The 60 cm (24 inches) width will probably remain because electrical appliances are based on that size; I don’t think Ikea will produce custom-sized appliances. The depth won’t be reduced either, because otherwise you could just buy countertops from the hardware store. Basically, they will only change the hole measurements so that Faktum fronts no longer fit. Furthermore, there will probably be a shorter height because low kitchens are trendy.
That’s why you got the voucher in your store “just like that.” I am absolutely sure that in June this promotion was listed on the Ikea website and without the Family card requirement! In my view, promotions on the website apply nationwide in Germany! The Family card may have benefits, but not everyone wants to share their data with Ikea, and it’s also about the principle of keeping one’s word.
Furthermore, I find the new “Windows 8” style design on the website just cheap. I always thought there were creative minds working at Ikea, but instead they fully rely on Microsoft.
